The Saints began in Brisbane in 1973, when singer Chris Bailey, guitarist Ed Kuepper, and drummer Ivor Hay started developing a sound that had little connection to the polished Australian pop and pub rock surrounding them. Working largely in isolation from the scenes forming in New York and London, they created music driven by distorted guitar, impatience, and a fierce determination to operate on their own terms.
The band made its first lasting international statement with “(I’m) Stranded,” released independently on Fatal Records in 1976. Its combination of speed, abrasion, and defiance attracted attention overseas and led to a deal with EMI. The debut album (I’m) Stranded followed in 1977, establishing The Saints as one of the earliest and most important bands associated with the first wave of punk rock.
Eternally Yours arrived in 1978 and immediately demonstrated that The Saints were not interested in repeating one formula. Brass, soul, rhythm and blues, and more expansive arrangements entered the music without weakening its urgency. Later that year, Prehistoric Sounds pushed those ideas even further. It became the final studio album made by the Bailey-Kuepper partnership before creative differences split the original group.
Bailey continued recording under The Saints’ name with changing lineups. The Monkey Puzzle appeared in 1981, followed by the 1982 album commonly known as Casablanca and also issued internationally as Out in the Jungle… Where Things Ain’t So Pleasant. A Little Madness to Be Free arrived in 1984, while All Fools Day in 1986 and Prodigal Son in 1988 showed Bailey broadening the band’s music through melodic rock, folk, blues, and carefully arranged ballads.
The Saints remained active through the 1990s and 2000s. Howling, Everybody Knows the Monkey, Spit the Blues Out, Nothing Is Straight in My House, and Imperious Delirium preserved the band’s independent character while giving Bailey room to write in a more reflective and blues-oriented style. King of the Sun followed in 2012, and its later companion release, King of the Midnight Sun, presented alternate full-band versions of the same material.
The catalog received its final studio chapter with Long March Through the Jazz Age, recorded in Sydney in 2018 and released posthumously in 2025. The album added twelve songs to The Saints’ recorded legacy, including “Empires (Sometimes We Fall),” “Judas,” “Bruises,” and “Will You Still Be There.” It brought the band’s studio-album total to fifteen and served as the last completed album led by Bailey.
The Saints were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001, confirming the scale of their influence on Australian rock music. Bailey remained the group’s only constant member across its many eras, while Kuepper, Hay, and the musicians who passed through later lineups each contributed to a catalog that resisted simple classification. Bailey died in 2022, but the songs he left behind continue to connect the first shock of Brisbane punk with decades of restless songwriting.
The list below gathers the album tracks, bonus recordings, alternate sessions, and later versions represented in The Saints’ catalog. Repeated song titles are retained when they identify separate recordings or appearances on different releases.
