Machine Gun Kelly’s story is one of transformation, ambition, and the refusal to be boxed into any single category. Born Colson Baker in Houston, Texas, and raised in several cities around the world before settling in Cleveland, Ohio, he grew up surrounded by instability but found his focus through music. That sense of movement and survival shaped the restless creative energy that would define his career. By the time he was a teenager, he had already started recording his own songs, developing the fast, sharp lyrical flow that would later become his trademark. His stage name, Machine Gun Kelly, came from both his rapid-fire delivery and his unrelenting attitude, qualities that quickly earned him recognition in the underground rap scene.
He gained early attention with his mixtapes, particularly Lace Up in 2010, which caught the ears of both fans and major labels. His raw storytelling and ability to mix aggression with vulnerability stood out, and soon after, he signed with Bad Boy Records and Interscope. In 2012, he released his debut studio album, also titled Lace Up, which featured the hit single “Wild Boy.” The song became his first major success and announced him as a new force in hip-hop. The album debuted in the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 and established him as an artist unafraid to channel his pain and defiance through his music.
His second album, General Admission, released in 2015, pushed deeper into personal territory. The record balanced themes of fame, addiction, and self-discovery with hard-hitting production and intense lyricism. Songs like “Till I Die” and “Gone” reflected his growing confidence as both a writer and performer. The album was well-received by critics and fans alike, marking a step forward in his creative evolution. By this time, Machine Gun Kelly had also begun branching out into acting, appearing in films such as Beyond the Lights and Nerve, showing an early glimpse of his broader ambitions.
In 2017, he released Bloom, his third studio album, which leaned into a more melodic sound while maintaining his signature edge. The album included the massive hit “Bad Things,” a collaboration with Camila Cabello that climbed to number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and went multi-platinum. The success of “Bad Things” introduced Machine Gun Kelly to a wider audience and demonstrated his ability to blend genres seamlessly. That same year, he played Tommy Lee in the acclaimed Netflix film The Dirt, based on the story of Mötley Crüe, earning praise for his authentic portrayal.
By 2020, Machine Gun Kelly reinvented himself yet again, this time breaking into pop-punk with his fifth studio album, Tickets to My Downfall. Working closely with drummer and producer Travis Barker, he crafted a record that brought guitar-driven rock back into the mainstream. Songs like “Bloody Valentine” and “My Ex’s Best Friend” dominated the charts and streaming platforms, while the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. It was a bold move that paid off, earning him new fans and critical respect for his willingness to take risks. In a world where most artists stick to one lane, Machine Gun Kelly proved that reinvention could be a form of artistic honesty.
In 2022, he followed up with Mainstream Sellout, which continued his pop-punk trajectory and featured collaborations with artists like Willow, Lil Wayne, and Bring Me the Horizon. The album also debuted at number one, cementing his place as one of the few artists of his generation to achieve success in multiple genres. Machine Gun Kelly’s sound had become a blend of rap, rock, and punk, reflecting the chaos and creativity that defined his life. His music resonated deeply with young audiences who saw in him a voice for their frustrations, insecurities, and desire to be understood.
Throughout his career, Machine Gun Kelly has earned numerous accolades, including American Music Award nominations, MTV Europe Music Awards, and multiple Billboard chart achievements. His work has been recognized not only for its commercial impact but also for its influence on modern music’s genre fluidity. In addition to his albums, he has released countless singles and collaborations that continue to showcase his range as an artist.
Outside of music, Machine Gun Kelly’s creative pursuits extend into acting, directing, and fashion. He has appeared in a variety of film and television roles, including Project Power and The Last Son, and co-directed the film Taurus, a semi-autobiographical story about fame and excess. His relationship with actress Megan Fox has also kept him in the public eye, but behind the headlines, he continues to use his platform to speak about mental health, addiction, and self-expression.
