The Airborne Toxic Event began as the creative vision of Mikel Jollett, a writer and musician from Los Angeles, California, who transformed personal hardship and literary inspiration into one of the most distinctive alternative rock projects of the late 2000s and 2010s. The band formed in 2006 after Jollett, then working as a novelist, decided to channel his storytelling instincts into songwriting following a difficult period in his life. He was joined by guitarist Steven Chen, bassist Noah Harmon, drummer Daren Taylor, and classically trained violinist and keyboardist Anna Bulbrook. Their combination of traditional rock instrumentation with orchestral textures quickly set them apart in the Los Angeles music scene, where their emotionally charged performances built a devoted following even before the release of their debut album.

Their self-titled debut album, The Airborne Toxic Event, was released in 2008 through Majordomo Records. Recorded at Sage & Sound Studios in Hollywood and produced by Pete Min, the album captured the tension and introspection that defined Jollett’s lyrical style. It featured the breakout single “Sometime Around Midnight,” a song inspired by Jollett’s own experiences and written in a single burst of emotion. The track became a major success, peaking at number four on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and reaching platinum certification. The album also included songs like “Gasoline” and “Does This Mean You’re Moving On?,” each showcasing the band’s ability to merge raw rock energy with poetic narrative. The success of the debut led to extensive touring, critical recognition, and an appearance on numerous late-night television programs that helped solidify their reputation as a live powerhouse.

In 2011, the group released their second studio album, All at Once, through Island Records. Produced by Dave Sardy, the album marked a shift toward a more expansive sound, with fuller arrangements and a more confident production approach. Songs such as “Changing” and “All for a Woman” reflected a band coming into its own both musically and emotionally. The album reached number seventeen on the Billboard 200 and continued to strengthen their presence in the alternative rock landscape. The band spent much of the following years on the road, building a reputation for intense and emotionally charged live performances that blended classical instrumentation with rock dynamics.

The Airborne Toxic Event continued to evolve with their third album, Such Hot Blood, released in 2013. Produced by Jacquire King, the record took a more personal and introspective approach, featuring songs that delved into themes of love, loss, and self-reflection. Tracks like “Timeless” and “The Storm” displayed the band’s continued growth as songwriters and performers, balancing energy with depth. The album reached number twenty-six on the Billboard 200 and was particularly praised for its emotional honesty and the strength of Jollett’s vocal delivery.

In 2015, the band released Dope Machines, an album that represented a stylistic departure with its focus on electronic and synth-based textures. Recorded at Big Bad Sound Studios in Los Angeles and produced by Jollett himself, it showcased a more modern production style while maintaining the emotional gravity that had defined their earlier work. Songs like “Wrong” and “California” explored themes of modern disconnection and longing. Later that same year, the band released Songs of God and Whiskey, a companion album recorded largely acoustically. The contrast between the two albums reflected Jollett’s dual artistic impulses—one grounded in technology and modernity, the other rooted in raw, intimate storytelling.

After several years of touring and a period of relative quiet, The Airborne Toxic Event returned in 2020 with Hollywood Park, an album inspired by Jollett’s memoir of the same name. The record was deeply autobiographical, chronicling his early life growing up in the Synanon commune and his journey through loss and identity. Recorded at Kingsize Soundlabs and produced by Jollett and Tony Hoffer, Hollywood Park marked a return to the band’s emotional core while integrating the lush arrangements and literary sensibility that had always defined their sound. The album was praised for its cohesion and sincerity, with songs like “Come on Out” and “Hollywood Park” serving as powerful reflections of Jollett’s life story.

Beyond their recorded work, The Airborne Toxic Event are celebrated for their commitment to emotional authenticity and the literary depth of their songwriting. Jollett’s background as a novelist informs his lyrical approach, giving each song a sense of narrative purpose. The band’s willingness to explore different genres and production styles has kept their music both unpredictable and compelling. Over the years, they have also remained dedicated to charitable causes and artistic collaboration, often participating in benefit concerts and cultural events in their hometown of Los Angeles.
