We Came As Romans built their reputation through persistence, emotional honesty, and a message of hope that resonated deeply with their audience. The band formed in Troy, Michigan, in 2005 under the name This Emergency before adopting the We Came As Romans name. Over the next several years, the lineup developed around vocalists David Stephens and Kyle Pavone, guitarists Joshua Moore and Lou Cotton, bassist Andy Glass, and drummer Eric Choi. Their sound joined melodic metalcore and post-hardcore with electronic textures, heavy breakdowns, and lyrics centered on unity, personal growth, and perseverance.

The group’s earliest recordings appeared on the self-released EPs Demonstrations and Dreams in 2008. Those releases introduced songs including “Conditions,” “Shapes,” “Dreams,” and “Intentions,” with the latter two later re-recorded for the band’s debut album. The EPs helped We Came As Romans build a grassroots following before signing with Equal Vision Records.

To Plant a Seed arrived in 2009 and immediately established the band within the metalcore community. Produced by Joey Sturgis, the album combined melodic guitar work, keyboards, electronic elements, and powerful breakdowns. “To Plant a Seed,” “Broken Statues,” “Beliefs,” and “Roads That Don’t End and Views That Never Cease” became defining early songs. The deluxe edition added “To Move On Is to Grow,” extending the record’s central message of development and forward movement.

The band’s second album, Understanding What We’ve Grown to Be, was released in 2011 and explored a darker emotional landscape. “Mis//Understanding,” “What I Wished I Never Had,” “Just Keep Breathing,” and the title track examined the challenge of maintaining hope through conflict and disappointment. A later deluxe edition added “Let These Words Last Forever,” “The King of Silence,” and “Fair-Weather.”

We Came As Romans reached a new commercial level with Tracing Back Roots in 2013. Produced by John Feldmann, the album debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200. “Hope,” “Fade Away,” “Never Let Me Go,” and “I Survive,” featuring Aaron Gillespie, presented a more melodic version of the band without abandoning its heavier foundation. The group continued that evolution on its self-titled 2015 album, which included “The World I Used to Know,” “Regenerate,” “Who Will Pray?,” and “Tear It Down.”

Cold Like War, released in 2017 through SharpTone Records, brought renewed weight and urgency to the band’s sound. “Wasted Age,” “Cold Like War,” “Lost in the Moment,” “Two Hands,” and “Promise Me” reflected internal tension, endurance, and the pressures surrounding the group. The album became the final We Came As Romans studio record to feature Kyle Pavone.

Pavone died in 2018 at the age of 28. Rather than disband, We Came As Romans chose to continue in his honor, with Stephens carrying the vocal role while the remaining members preserved the emotional and musical legacy they had created together. The standalone songs “Carry the Weight” and “From the First Note” marked the beginning of that new chapter.

The band released Darkbloom in 2022. The album confronted grief directly while continuing to search for renewal through songs including “Black Hole,” featuring Caleb Shomo, “Daggers,” featuring Zero 9:36, “Golden,” “Holding the Embers,” and the title track. A separate version of “Darkbloom” with Brand of Sacrifice pushed the song into even heavier territory.

In 2025, We Came As Romans released their seventh studio album, All Is Beautiful… Because We’re Doomed. Its thirteen-song sequence included “Bad Luck,” “Lake of Fire,” “Culture Wound,” “Where Did You Go?,” “No Rest for the Dreamer,” and “Circling a Dying Sun.” The record continued the band’s movement between metalcore aggression, electronic atmosphere, and large melodic choruses. A later collaborative version of “Bad Luck” joined the band with Currents and Anthony Tomaso of After the Burial.
