When three experienced musicians from disbanded or separate projects converged in New Jersey during 2008, they created a collaboration that would achieve rapid commercial success and chart dominance within four years. Fun, a pop rock band from New York City, emerged from Nate Ruess’s departure from his previous group and his connection with Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff, each bringing established musical backgrounds to the project. The band released two studio albums between 2009 and 2012, establishing themselves as a significant force in contemporary pop music during the early 2010s.

The group’s trajectory accelerated substantially following the release of their second album, Some Nights, in February 2012. This album reached number three on the U.S. Billboard 200 and topped both the Top Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts. The lead single from the album, “We Are Young,” featuring artist Janelle Monáe, became a cultural phenomenon, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 2012 and achieving 300,000 or more downloads for seven consecutive weeks—a record for digital sales at that time. The single appeared in multiple television programs and commercials, amplifying the band’s visibility.

At the 55th Annual Grammy Awards held in February 2013, Fun received recognition for their achievements. The band won two major awards: Song of the Year for “We Are Young” and Best New Artist. Their second album generated multiple successful singles including “Some Nights” and “Carry On,” both reaching the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band also received Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and a nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album for Some Nights. In February 2015, the band announced they were taking time off to pursue individual projects, entering an indefinite hiatus that has continued since that announcement.

Nate Ruess

Nate Ruess formed Fun after his previous band, the Format, dissolved in February 2008. He immediately approached Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff to collaborate on this new project, serving as the group’s lead vocalist and sampler throughout the band’s active period from 2008 to 2015. Ruess handled vocal duties across both studio albums, Aim and Ignite and Some Nights, and was the primary songwriter for the band’s major hits. His vocal performance on “We Are Young,” the album’s flagship single, became synonymous with the song’s international success. Beyond his work with Fun, Ruess has maintained a solo career, releasing solo albums and collaborating with other artists in the music industry. He also competed on television competition shows and has maintained ongoing musical projects outside of the band’s scope.

Andrew Dost

Andrew Dost joined Fun in 2008 after having toured as a multi-instrumentalist with the Format, Ruess’s previous band. Throughout Fun’s seven-year existence until their 2015 hiatus, Dost served as the band’s primary instrumentalist, handling keyboards, piano, guitars, flugelhorn, trumpet, glockenspiel, bass guitar, drums, and providing backing vocals across both studio albums. His instrumental contributions shaped the sonic landscape of Aim and Ignite and Some Nights, with his keyboard work particularly prominent throughout both releases. Dost’s musical background in providing various instrumentation and arrangements contributed significantly to the band’s distinctive sound. After the band’s 2015 split, he became the lead singer of Metal Bubble Trio, shifting from his primary role as an instrumentalist to a vocal position in a new musical venture.

Jack Antonoff

Jack Antonoff was introduced to the Fun project through Nate Ruess’s connection following the Format’s tour with Steel Train, where Antonoff was involved. From 2008 through the band’s indefinite hiatus in 2015, Antonoff contributed guitars, drums, percussion, bass guitar, keyboards, piano, and backing vocals to Fun’s output. His work appears on both Aim and Ignite and Some Nights, with his guitar work and percussion arrangements integral to the band’s sound. Antonoff’s involvement lasted seven years, contributing to the albums’ production and performing extensively during the band’s touring period. Following Fun’s 2015 hiatus, Antonoff became the primary figure in the indie rock band Bleachers, which emerged as his primary musical focus. In 2024 interviews, he reflected on his Fun experience, noting that the band had an unintentional quality that he found personally challenging, and he emphasized his decision to focus on long-term musical projects that aligned with his artistic vision.

Emily Moore

Emily Moore joined Fun as a supporting musician in 2009, remaining with the band through their 2015 hiatus. During her six-year tenure, Moore performed guitars, vocals, keyboards, saxophone, maracas, and violin, contributing to the band’s arrangements and live performances. Her instrumentation appeared across the band’s later material and touring period, adding textural elements through her work with various instruments. Beyond her involvement with Fun, Moore has pursued musical projects and performances outside the band’s scope.

Will Noon

Will Noon served as Fun’s drummer and percussionist from 2011 until the band’s 2015 hiatus. Previously associated with the band Straylight Run, Noon joined Fun during the later stages of the group’s active period. His drumming and percussion work contributed to the band’s live performances and later material during the final years before the group took their indefinite break. Noon brought his established drumming experience from his previous musical work to the Fun project during this period.

Jonathan Goldstein

Jonathan Goldstein was Fun’s initial drummer and percussionist from 2008 to 2010, playing during the band’s formative years and the recording of Aim and Ignite. His drumming contributions appeared on the debut album, establishing the rhythmic foundation for the band’s earliest material. After his departure in 2010, additional drummers would eventually join the band for touring and other performances.

Jessica Martins

Jessica Martins participated in Fun during the band’s formation year in 2008, performing guitars, vocals, and keyboards as part of the early ensemble. Her instrumental and vocal contributions were present during the band’s initial development phase before the group’s lineup evolved and expanded.

David Lizmi

David Lizmi performed bass guitar for Fun in 2008 during the band’s earliest formation period. He was part of the initial instrumental foundation as the group developed their sound and began their first recordings and performances.

Maggie Malyn

Maggie Malyn contributed violin to Fun’s sound in 2008, participating in the band’s formative year when the group was still establishing their musical direction and compositional approach.

Am Wheeldon

Am Wheeldon played bass guitar for Fun during the band’s first year in 2008, contributing to the band’s early instrumental arrangements during the formation stage before other members joined for later releases and tours.

Nate Harold

Nate Harold served as Fun’s bass guitarist from 2009 through 2015, spanning nearly the entire period covered by the band’s studio albums and touring years. His bass work appeared on Some Nights and the band’s live performances throughout the early 2010s.

Will Yates

Will Yates contributed bass guitar to Fun in 2009, playing during the period between the release of the first album and before additional touring musicians were incorporated into the band’s lineup.
