Len began in Toronto in the early 1990s, when siblings Marc Costanzo and Sharon Costanzo started working on songs together and exploring a mix of alternative rock, pop, and hip-hop influences. Their first album, The Mavericks, appeared in 1990, followed by Get Your Legs Broken in 1997; both recordings were produced independently and set the stage for their later commercial breakthrough. Everything changed in 1999 with the release of You Cannot Stop the Bum Rush, propelled by the single “Steal My Sunshine.” That song exploded worldwide, becoming one of the defining hits of its era and giving Len the kind of exposure few bands achieve on their first major label release.
After that success, the band released The Diary of the Madmen in 2005, embracing a more polished pop-rock sound under Marc Costanzo’s continued leadership as songwriter and producer. Although it did not match the massive impact of their earlier hit, it demonstrated the group’s commitment to evolving their style while remaining true to their creative roots. In 2012, Len returned with It’s Easy If You Try, an album that reflected years of experience and a mature approach to melody and arrangement. The project showed that Len was more than a one-hit wonder; it was a musical partnership willing to regroup and create on their own terms.
Their most recent full-length album, Kill the Lights, was released in 2015. The album continued their independent streak and showcased Marc and Sharon’s dedication to controlled, homegrown music production. While none of the tracks achieved the chart success of “Steal My Sunshine,” the album reinforced the band’s identity as a stable creative outlet rather than a fleeting commercial project. Over more than two decades, Len has released five studio albums, navigating the ups and downs of the music industry while maintaining its authenticity.
Len’s impact remains tied to “Steal My Sunshine,” a song whose success opened the door for their career and has kept their name alive in playlists and pop culture references decades later. That single stands as a monument to the band’s unique sound and to the moment when their blend of sunshine pop and alternative rhythm captured global attention. Even though their later albums did not reach the same heights, the consistency of their output speaks to a group more interested in crafting music than chasing trends.
