Barenaked Ladies formed in 1988 when two Toronto-area teenagers decided to turn a humorous band name into reality. Ed Robertson and Steven Page attended the same school in Scarborough, Ontario, and strengthened their friendship while working together at music camp. Their partnership soon developed into a performing duo, which expanded through the additions of brothers Jim and Andy Creeggan and drummer Tyler Stewart.
The band achieved major Canadian success with its 1992 debut album, Gordon, which included “If I Had $1,000,000,” “Brian Wilson,” “Enid,” and “Be My Yoko Ono.” Barenaked Ladies broke through in the United States with Stunt in 1998. The album reached number three on the Billboard 200 and produced the number-one single “One Week.” Maroon followed in 2000 and reached number five, while “Pinch Me” became another major hit. The group later gained an entirely new audience by writing and recording “The Big Bang Theory Theme.”
Barenaked Ladies’ official biography identifies In Flight, released in 2023, as the band’s eighteenth studio album. The group has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, earned two Grammy Award nominations, won eight competitive JUNO Awards, and entered the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2018. The current lineup consists of Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Tyler Stewart, and Kevin Hearn, who have performed together without a lineup change since Steven Page’s departure in 2009.
The quartet remained active in 2026, releasing the new songs “Almost Ready” and “Careful (For Dee)” while continuing its international touring schedule. The complete roster of current and former Barenaked Ladies members is detailed below.
Ed Robertson
Ed Robertson co-founded Barenaked Ladies with Steven Page in 1988. He has remained the band’s guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and most visible spokesperson throughout its entire history. Robertson and Page knew each other from school in Scarborough and later worked together at Interprovincial Music Camp before turning their musical partnership into Barenaked Ladies.
Robertson has appeared on every Barenaked Ladies studio album, from Gordon through In Flight. His songs and co-written material include “If I Had $1,000,000,” “The Old Apartment,” “One Week,” “Pinch Me,” and many other central recordings in the band’s catalog. His rapid-fire delivery on “One Week” helped give Barenaked Ladies its only number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100.
Following Page’s departure in 2009, Robertson became the band’s principal frontman and creative leader. His guitar playing, singing, improvisational humor, and freestyle rapping continue to shape the group’s concerts. He also wrote “The Big Bang Theory Theme,” which became one of the band’s most widely recognized recordings.
Outside the group’s recordings and tours, Robertson has supported environmental initiatives connected to Barenaked Planet and REVERB. He survived a private-plane crash in August 2008 and returned to performing with the band. Robertson remained at the center of the group’s 2026 activity, writing “Almost Ready” and “Careful (For Dee).”
Jim Creeggan
Jim Creeggan joined Barenaked Ladies in 1989 after he and his brother Andy were invited to perform with Ed Robertson and Steven Page. Creeggan plays double bass, electric bass, and contributes both backing and lead vocals. He has remained with the group continuously since joining, making him one of its longest-serving members.
Creeggan’s bass playing appears throughout the band’s recorded history, including Gordon, Maybe You Should Drive, Born on a Pirate Ship, Stunt, Maroon, and every subsequent studio album through In Flight. His melodic approach on both upright and electric bass became an important part of the group’s sound.
As the band continued after 2009, Creeggan took on a larger songwriting and vocal role. He contributed original material to albums including All in Good Time, Grinning Streak, Silverball, Fake Nudes, Detour de Force, and In Flight.
Outside Barenaked Ladies, Creeggan formed the Brothers Creeggan with his brother Andy and Ian McLauchlan. The group released four albums between 1995 and 2002. Creeggan was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame with Barenaked Ladies in 2018.
Tyler Stewart
Tyler Stewart joined Barenaked Ladies in 1990 after meeting the group in Waterloo, Ontario. He became the band’s permanent drummer while Andy Creeggan was away on a student exchange trip. When Creeggan returned, he moved to keyboards and percussion, leaving Stewart established behind the drum kit.
Stewart has performed on every major Barenaked Ladies release beginning with The Yellow Tape and Gordon. His drumming can be heard on the band’s best-known songs, including “Brian Wilson,” “If I Had $1,000,000,” “The Old Apartment,” “One Week,” “It’s All Been Done,” and “Pinch Me.”
After Steven Page left in 2009, Stewart assumed a larger vocal role while continuing to contribute to the band’s comic stage banter and improvisation. His energetic drumming and personality have remained essential to the group’s live performances.
Outside Barenaked Ladies, Stewart participated in the short-lived project Don’t Talk Dance and has periodically performed with the rockabilly band Pogo Rodeo. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame with the band in 2018.
Kevin Hearn
Kevin Hearn joined Barenaked Ladies after Andy Creeggan’s departure in 1995. He became the group’s keyboardist and expanded his role to include guitar, accordion, vocals, and other instruments. Hearn’s arrival brought another distinctive songwriter and musical personality into the band.
Hearn appeared on the live album Rock Spectacle and became a central contributor to studio albums beginning with Stunt. His keyboards, guitars, arrangements, and vocals have appeared on every subsequent Barenaked Ladies studio album through In Flight.
Shortly after Stunt was released in 1998, Hearn was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent treatment, including bone marrow transplants. Chris Brown and Greg Kurstin filled in during portions of the tour while Hearn recovered. He later returned to the band and resumed recording and touring.
Hearn has also maintained an extensive career outside Barenaked Ladies through solo recordings, Kevin Hearn and Thin Buckle, and collaborations with numerous artists. His eclectic writing and multi-instrumental abilities have played a major role in broadening the band’s sound. He entered the Canadian Music Hall of Fame with Barenaked Ladies in 2018.
Steven Page
Steven Page co-founded Barenaked Ladies with Ed Robertson in 1988 and served as a co-lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and principal songwriter until 2009. Page’s powerful voice, wide vocal range, theatrical delivery, and harmonies became defining features of the band’s original sound.
Page appeared on the group’s early independent cassettes and every studio album from Gordon through Barenaked Ladies Are Men. He wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s most enduring songs, including “Brian Wilson,” “What a Good Boy,” “The Old Apartment,” “It’s All Been Done,” “Call and Answer,” and “If I Had $1,000,000.”
Page left Barenaked Ladies by mutual agreement in February 2009 and continued as a solo recording artist, concert performer, and composer for theatrical productions. His solo career has included albums released under his own name and performances with the Steven Page Trio.
Page was included with Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Tyler Stewart, and Kevin Hearn in the band’s 2018 Canadian Music Hall of Fame induction. He reunited with Barenaked Ladies for the ceremony, marking his first public performance with the group since his departure.
Andy Creeggan
Andy Creeggan joined Barenaked Ladies in 1989, initially contributing percussion and drums. He temporarily left in 1990 for a student exchange trip to South America. After returning in 1991, he rejoined the band on keyboards, congas, accordion, and additional percussion while Tyler Stewart remained the drummer.
Creeggan performed during the period that produced The Yellow Tape, Gordon, and Maybe You Should Drive. His keyboards and percussion helped define the band’s early acoustic arrangements and the eclectic sound that brought it national attention in Canada.
He left Barenaked Ladies in 1995 to pursue music studies at McGill University. Following his departure, he continued recording and performing as a solo artist and with the Brothers Creeggan alongside his brother Jim.
Creeggan joined Barenaked Ladies onstage during the group’s 2018 JUNO Awards performance, although the Canadian Music Hall of Fame induction itself officially recognized the current quartet and Steven Page. His appearance reunited all six musicians associated with the band’s best-known 1990s lineup.
