Laufey Lín Jónsdóttir’s career begins with a background rooted equally in classical training and contemporary songwriting. She was raised between Reykjavík, Iceland, and Washington, D.C., and grew up in a household where music education was a constant presence. She studied piano and cello from a young age and performed with orchestras while still a student. Her formal training continued at the Berklee College of Music, where she studied jazz performance and composition. These early years shaped the foundation of her work, blending traditional instrumentation with modern songwriting approaches that would later define her recordings.
Her first public recognition came during the COVID era, when she began releasing original songs independently and sharing performances online. In 2020, she released the single “Street by Street,” followed by her debut extended play, Typical of Me, in 2021. That project introduced her songwriting voice and established her interest in combining jazz-influenced arrangements with accessible pop melodies. The EP charted internationally and helped her build a dedicated audience without traditional radio exposure, marking the true beginning of her professional recording career.
Laufey released her first full-length studio album, Everything I Know About Love, in 2022. The album debuted at number one on the Icelandic albums chart and entered the Billboard 200 in the United States. Songs such as “Valentine” and “Fragile” expanded her reach and brought her music to a broader international audience. The album’s orchestral arrangements and lyrical focus on vulnerability and romance became defining elements of her sound and set the stage for her next release.
Her second studio album, Bewitched, arrived in 2023 and represented a significant commercial and critical breakthrough. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart and the Billboard Top Classical Albums chart, while also entering the Top Ten of the Billboard 200. Singles such as “From the Start” and “Promise” gained widespread attention, particularly through streaming platforms. In 2024, Bewitched won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, making Laufey the youngest artist ever to receive that honor in the category.
In 2024, she released Bewitched The Goddess Edition, an expanded version of the album that included additional tracks and continued the album’s commercial momentum. By that point, Laufey had released three studio albums and one extended play, building a catalog that consistently charted across jazz, classical, and pop classifications. Her ability to bridge those genres without compromising musical identity is a central reason her work resonates with listeners across age groups.
Laufey’s appeal extends beyond recordings and chart performance. She has been widely embraced for bringing jazz and orchestral-influenced music to younger audiences who may not have previously engaged with those styles. Her performances often incorporate full orchestras and string sections, reinforcing her classical background while remaining accessible. Outside of her recording and touring career, Laufey has taken concrete steps to support young musicians. In 2022, she founded The Laufey Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to provide resources, mentorship, and educational opportunities for young musicians, with a particular focus on those pursuing classical and jazz training. The foundation reflects her commitment to music education and access, drawing directly from her own background and experiences within formal music study.
