Hoobastank formed in Agoura Hills, California, in 1994 after vocalist Doug Robb and guitarist Dan Estrin decided to build a band together. Drummer Chris Hesse and bassist Markku Lappalainen completed the lineup that established the group on the Southern California club circuit, where Hoobastank shared stages with other rising acts including Incubus and Linkin Park. The earliest version of the band also featured saxophonist Jeremy Wasser and leaned more heavily into funk metal, ska, and experimental rock.
The group’s first full-length release was the independently issued They Sure Don’t Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To in 1998. Hoobastank then completed an album called Forward, but the project was shelved after the band signed with Island Records and moved toward a more direct guitar-driven sound. Several songs from that period were reshaped for the self-titled major-label album released in 2001.
Hoobastank introduced the band to a national audience through “Crawling in the Dark,” “Running Away,” and “Remember Me.” The album reached the Billboard 200 and earned platinum certification in the United States. Its expanded editions also gathered soundtrack songs, international bonus tracks, and acoustic recordings that had previously appeared across several releases.
The commercial peak arrived with The Reason in 2003. Produced by Howard Benson, the album combined the heavier attack of “Out of Control” and “Same Direction” with the melodic pull of “Disappear” and its title track. “The Reason” reached Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, became an international hit, and eventually passed one billion streams on Spotify. The Recording Academy nominated Hoobastank for Best Rock Album and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Every Man for Himself followed in 2006 with “If I Were You,” “Inside of You,” and “Born to Lead.” Bassist Markku Lappalainen had left the group, beginning a period of lineup changes before Jesse Charland became the band’s long-term bassist. Hoobastank continued through For(N)ever, the acoustic collection Is This the Day?, Fight or Flight, and Push Pull, moving between hard rock, alternative pop, acoustic arrangements, and increasingly polished production.
The catalog also extends beyond the studio albums. Hoobastank recorded “Right Before Your Eyes” for Daredevil: The Album, “Did You” for music connected to Spider-Man 2, and “Connected” for the Halo 2 soundtrack. The band also released “Ghostbusters,” the Haiti relief track “We Are One,” the Olympic-themed “Never Be Here Again,” and several acoustic and international bonus recordings.
The twentieth anniversaries of Hoobastank and The Reason brought expanded digital editions and renewed attention to the group’s early-2000s recordings. In 2023, “The Reason” received both a Latin version with Jonathan Moly and a sped-up edition. Steve Aoki and Sound Rush reworked the song with Hoobastank in January 2026, and the band followed in June with the new standalone single “How Do You Sleep?”
