A volatile mix of art-school attitude, stripped-down instrumentation, and downtown New York energy propelled Yeah Yeah Yeahs from the early-2000s underground to international recognition. The band formed in New York City in 2000 when Karen O and Nick Zinner shifted from an acoustic project called Unitard into a louder direction and added drummer Brian Chase. The trio quickly became known for an intense live presence and a sound that drew from garage rock, punk, art rock, and dance music.

The band’s recording career began with the self-titled EP Yeah Yeah Yeahs, first released independently in 2001. The Machine EP followed in 2002, leading into the debut studio album Fever to Tell in 2003. Co-produced by Dave Sitek, the album reached number 55 on the Billboard 200 and number 13 in the United Kingdom. “Date with the Night,” “Pin,” and “Maps” all reached the UK Top 40, while “Maps” became the song most closely associated with the band’s early years.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs deliberately changed direction for Show Your Bones in 2006. The album expanded the group’s sound through songs including “Gold Lion,” “Cheated Hearts,” “Turn Into,” and “Phenomena.” It earned the band its second Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, following the nomination received by Fever to Tell.

The five-song EP Is Is appeared in 2007 before the band moved toward synthesizers and dance-rock on It’s Blitz! in 2009. “Zero,” “Heads Will Roll,” “Skeletons,” “Soft Shock,” and “Hysteric” presented a different side of the trio without abandoning the tension and emotional directness of the earlier records. It’s Blitz! received another Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.

Mosquito, released in 2013, reached number five on the Billboard 200, the band’s highest position on that chart. The album included “Sacrilege,” “Despair,” “Under the Earth,” “Subway,” and “Buried Alive,” featuring Dr. Octagon. The video for “Despair” was filmed on top of the Empire State Building, connecting the group’s music once again to the city where its career began.

After a lengthy break between studio albums, Yeah Yeah Yeahs signed with Secretly Canadian and released Cool It Down in 2022. The eight-song album opened with “Spitting Off the Edge of the World,” featuring Perfume Genius, and continued with “Lovebomb,” “Wolf,” “Fleez,” “Burning,” “Blacktop,” “Different Today,” and “Mars.” The album and its lead single brought the band two additional Grammy nominations.

The trio of Karen O, Nick Zinner, and Brian Chase remained active onstage after the album, including the 2025 Hidden in Pieces Tour, which marked 25 years of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and reworked songs from across the catalog for smaller venues. The performances emphasized arrangements with strings, piano, and quieter dynamics alongside the explosive approach that first established the band.

Across five studio albums, four EPs, soundtrack appearances, charity releases, remixes, and non-album recordings, Yeah Yeah Yeahs created a compact catalog that repeatedly changed shape without losing its identity. Their recorded work moves from the raw impact of “Bang” and “Art Star” to the emotional pull of “Maps,” the dance-floor momentum of “Heads Will Roll,” and the expansive atmosphere of Cool It Down.
