The Used found its voice in Orem, Utah, where Bert McCracken, Jeph Howard, Quinn Allman, and Branden Steineckert came together in 2000. The group’s early days were far from glamorous. The musicians struggled with poverty, homelessness, and substance abuse while trying to establish themselves. After McCracken joined the lineup and contributed lyrics to what became “Maybe Memories,” the chemistry was immediate. The band recorded demos in Steineckert’s bedroom and eventually caught the attention of Goldfinger frontman John Feldmann, who helped introduce them to the music industry. Their rapid ascent led to a deal with Reprise Records in early 2002, only about a year after the group had formed.
Success arrived quickly with the release of The Used in 2002. The album established the band’s signature blend of post-hardcore intensity, emotional vulnerability, and melodic songwriting. Songs such as “The Taste of Ink,” “Buried Myself Alive,” and “Blue and Yellow” became staples of the era’s alternative rock and emo scenes. The momentum continued with In Love and Death in 2004, which became the band’s most commercially successful album and later achieved platinum certification in the United States. During this period, songs including “All That I’ve Got” and “Take It Away” helped expand the band’s audience and solidified their reputation as one of the defining acts of the 2000s rock landscape.
The band’s catalog continued to grow with Lies for the Liars in 2007, Artwork in 2009, Vulnerable in 2012, Imaginary Enemy in 2014, The Canyon in 2017, Heartwork in 2020, and Toxic Positivity in 2023. In total, The Used has released nine studio albums. Along the way they also issued live releases, EPs, compilation albums, and a steady stream of singles that kept them connected to their audience. Their ability to evolve while maintaining the emotional intensity that first attracted fans helped them remain relevant through multiple generations of rock listeners.
