Queens of the Stone Age formed in Palm Desert, California, in 1996, founded by guitarist and vocalist Josh Homme after the dissolution of his previous band, Kyuss. Homme established the group with a rotating lineup of musicians, beginning with drummer Alfredo Hernández, who had also played with Kyuss. Homme described the band’s musical approach as “robot rock,” characterized by repetitive, precise riffing and tightly constructed arrangements. The Palm Desert scene was instrumental in the group’s development, with generator parties, outdoor gatherings powered by generators where desert bands performed, providing the cultural backdrop for its emergence.

The band released its self-titled debut album in 1998 on Loosegroove Records, establishing its sound before signing with Interscope Records. The second album, Rated R, arrived in 2000 and increased the band’s visibility through songs including “The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret” and “Feel Good Hit of the Summer.” Songs for the Deaf followed in 2002 and became the group’s commercial breakthrough. Featuring Dave Grohl on drums, the album produced “No One Knows” and “Go with the Flow” and firmly established Queens of the Stone Age in mainstream rock.

Queens of the Stone Age have released eight studio albums: Queens of the Stone Age in 1998, Rated R in 2000, Songs for the Deaf in 2002, Lullabies to Paralyze in 2005, Era Vulgaris in 2007, …Like Clockwork in 2013, Villains in 2017, and In Times New Roman… in 2023. …Like Clockwork became the band’s first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200. The record was created during a difficult period for Homme, whose health problems and lengthy recovery influenced its darker atmosphere.

In Times New Roman… returned the band to a rawer and more abrasive sound while retaining the elaborate arrangements that had defined its later work. The album included “Emotion Sickness,” “Paper Machete,” “Carnavoyeur,” “Negative Space,” and “Straight Jacket Fitting.” It earned Grammy nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song, the latter for “Emotion Sickness.”

The lineup has undergone numerous changes, with Homme remaining the sole consistent member. Notable contributors have included Nick Oliveri, Mark Lanegan, Dave Grohl, Joey Castillo, and Alfredo Hernández. The long-running lineup surrounding Homme has featured Troy Van Leeuwen, Michael Shuman, Dean Fertita, and Jon Theodore, each contributing to the band’s layered guitars, rhythmic complexity, and expansive live sound.

In 2025, Queens of the Stone Age released Alive in the Catacombs, a five-track live EP recorded during a July 2024 performance in the Catacombs of Paris. The release presented dramatically reworked versions of “Running Joke / Paper Machete,” “Kalopsia,” “Villains of Circumstance,” “Suture Up Your Future,” and “I Never Came,” using the location’s natural echoes and unusual acoustics as part of the arrangements.

In July 2026, the band released the single “Easy Street.” The song followed Alive in the Catacombs and extended a catalog that has moved between desert rock, alternative rock, hard rock, psychedelia, and tightly controlled rhythmic experimentation.

The Queens of the Stone Age artist page at the Grammy Awards lists eight nominations without a win. Those nominations include Best Hard Rock Performance for “No One Knows,” “Go with the Flow,” “Little Sister,” and “Sick, Sick, Sick,” Best Rock Performance for “My God Is the Sun,” and Best Rock Album for …Like Clockwork, Villains, and In Times New Roman…. The members were also nominated as songwriters for “Emotion Sickness” in the Best Rock Song category.

Beyond Queens of the Stone Age, Homme has maintained several major side projects. The Desert Sessions, which began in 1997, brought different musicians together for collaborative recordings at Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California. Homme also produced Arctic Monkeys’ Humbug and co-wrote, produced, and performed on Iggy Pop’s Post Pop Depression. In 2009, he formed Them Crooked Vultures with Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones.

Queens of the Stone Age have built a reputation for a distinctive sound combining desert rock, alternative rock, hard rock, and experimental production. Heavy riffs, Homme’s vocals, unusual guitar voicings, and complex rhythmic structures have remained central to the group’s identity. Despite lineup changes and personal challenges, the band has maintained a critically respected catalog and an international audience across three decades.
