The Agony Scene emerged from Tulsa, Oklahoma, around the early 2000s, arriving as American metalcore drew more heavily on melodic death metal, hardcore, and the darker side of European extreme metal. Guitarist Chris Emmons was one of the band’s early constants, while Mike Williams moved from bass to lead vocals and became the voice most listeners associate with the group. The lineup changed repeatedly around those core figures, but the band’s music consistently favored sharp melodic guitar lines, violent rhythmic changes, and Williams’ abrasive vocal attack.
Their self-titled debut arrived through Solid State Records in 2003. Produced and engineered by Adam Dutkiewicz, The Agony Scene established the band’s combination of metalcore aggression and melodic death metal influence through songs such as “We Bury Our Dead at Dawn,” “Judas,” “Lines of Suicide,” and “The Damned.” The record also included a particularly heavy reinterpretation of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black,” which became one of the band’s best-known recordings.
The group moved to Roadrunner Records for The Darkest Red in 2005, an album that sharpened its writing on songs including “Scars of Your Disease,” “Prey,” “Suffer,” and “Scapegoat.” Two years later, Get Damned arrived through Century Media and pushed the band into an even more frantic mixture of metal, hardcore, and punk energy. That album’s original eleven-song program was expanded in international editions with covers of Social Distortion, Bad Religion, and the Dead Kennedys.
The Agony Scene broke up during 2008 but eventually returned, culminating in Tormentor in 2018 through Outerloop Records. The album reunited Mike Williams, Chris Emmons, and Brian Hodges and delivered ten tracks including “Hand of the Divine,” “The Submissive,” “The Apostate,” and “Serpent’s Tongue.” More recently, the band confirmed work on another full-length record and added BJ Sampson as a guitarist and writer, opening another chapter in a catalog that had already stretched across more than two decades.
