Black Midi formed in London in 2017 after Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, Morgan Simpson, and Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin met while attending the BRIT School. The group developed its reputation through volatile live performances at venues including the Windmill in Brixton, where their combination of art rock, post-punk, noise, jazz, and tightly controlled rhythmic chaos quickly attracted attention. Their first official single, “bmbmbm,” arrived in 2018 through Speedy Wunderground.
The band’s debut studio album, Schlagenheim, followed in 2019 and captured the aggressive, unpredictable character of their early performances through songs such as “953,” “Speedway,” “Near DT, MI,” “Of Schlagenheim,” and “Ducter.” Black Midi’s catalog was already expanding beyond the album through standalone singles including “Crow’s Perch,” “Talking Heads,” and “7-eleven,” as well as remixes, live recordings, and unusual collaborative projects.
Kwasniewski-Kelvin stepped away from the group before the recording of Cavalcade, which arrived in 2021 with a broader and more theatrical sound. The album produced “John L,” “Marlene Dietrich,” “Chondromalacia Patella,” “Slow,” and “Ascending Forth,” while the same period generated bonus tracks, covers, and the extensive Covercade collection. Black Midi followed with Hellfire in 2022, pushing their dramatic storytelling even further on “Welcome to Hell,” “Sugar/Tzu,” “Eat Men Eat,” “The Defence,” and “27 Questions.”
Black Midi went on hiatus in 2024 while its members pursued other projects. Founding guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin died in January 2026 at the age of 26. Across the band’s relatively compact studio discography, Black Midi also left behind an unusually deep collection of non-album singles, remixes, cover recordings, spoken-word experiments, collaborative improvisations, and officially released live material.
