The Black Keys formed in Akron, Ohio, in 2001 when guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney began recording together in Carney’s basement. Their stripped-down combination of distorted guitar, forceful drumming, and blues-rooted songwriting distinguished them during an era dominated by heavily produced rock and pop. The duo released its debut album, The Big Come Up, in 2002, drawing inspiration from artists including Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside while establishing the raw approach that defined its earliest recordings.

Thickfreakness followed in 2003, and Rubber Factory arrived in 2004 with songs including “10 A.M. Automatic,” “Girl Is on My Mind,” and “The Lengths.” The band also released The Moan in 2004 and paid tribute to Junior Kimbrough with Chulahoma: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough in 2006. These recordings documented the duo’s growing command of garage rock, hill country blues, and hypnotic rhythm.

The Black Keys expanded their sound with Magic Potion in 2006 and Attack & Release in 2008. Produced by Danger Mouse, Attack & Release introduced more elaborate arrangements and textures while retaining the band’s blues foundation. Songs including “I Got Mine,” “Strange Times,” and “Things Ain’t Like They Used to Be” marked a turning point in the duo’s development.

The band achieved its commercial breakthrough with Brothers in 2010. The album included “Tighten Up,” “Howlin’ for You,” “Next Girl,” and “Everlasting Light” and earned The Black Keys their first Grammy Awards. El Camino followed in 2011, producing “Lonely Boy,” “Gold on the Ceiling,” and “Little Black Submarines” while moving the duo further into arena-sized rock.

Turn Blue, released in 2014, presented a more atmospheric and introspective sound and became the band’s first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200. After a five-year break from studio albums, Auerbach and Carney returned with “Let’s Rock” in 2019, a direct celebration of electric guitar. Delta Kream followed in 2021 with interpretations of Mississippi hill country blues songs, and Dropout Boogie arrived in 2022.

The duo released Ohio Players in 2024, working with collaborators including Beck, Noel Gallagher, Dan the Automator, Greg Kurstin, Juicy J, and Lil Noid. The expanded Trophy Edition added “Sin City,” “Mi Tormenta,” “Stay in Your Grave,” and “I’m With the Band.” The album’s “Beautiful People (Stay High)” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance.

In 2025, The Black Keys released their 13th studio album, No Rain, No Flowers. The 11-song record included “The Night Before,” “Babygirl,” “Man on a Mission,” “On Repeat,” “Make You Mine,” and the title track. The project incorporated collaborations with songwriters and producers including Rick Nowels, Daniel Tashian, Scott Storch, and Desmond Child.

The band followed in May 2026 with its 14th studio album, Peaches!. Recorded as a raw collection of blues, soul, and rock-and-roll interpretations, the 10-song album included “You Got to Lose,” “Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire,” “She Does It Right,” “It’s a Dream,” and “Nobody But You Baby.” The release returned Auerbach and Carney to the spontaneous, live-in-the-room energy associated with their earliest records.

The Black Keys have won five Grammy Awards from 15 nominations. Their awards include Best Alternative Music Album for Brothers, Best Rock Album for El Camino, Best Rock Performance for “Lonely Boy,” and Best Rock Song for “Lonely Boy.” The duo’s catalog has continued to move between garage rock, blues, soul, psychedelia, and polished pop-rock without abandoning the rhythmic drive created by Auerbach’s guitar and Carney’s drums.

Beyond the band, Auerbach founded Easy Eye Sound, a Nashville studio and record label that has worked with established performers and emerging artists. Carney has produced and collaborated with musicians including Michelle Branch. Together, they have maintained The Black Keys as a prolific recording and touring act while continuing to explore the blues and rock traditions that shaped their partnership.
