Loverboy emerged from Canada’s rock scene at the end of the 1970s and became one of the most successful arena rock bands of the following decade. The group took shape around singer Mike Reno and guitarist Paul Dean, whose combination of powerful vocals, driving guitar riffs, and catchy songwriting gave Loverboy its unmistakable sound. Keyboardist Doug Johnson, bassist Scott Smith, and drummer Matt Frenette completed the classic lineup, which could deliver hard rock excitement without sacrificing melody.
The band’s self-titled debut arrived in 1980 with the singles “Turn Me Loose” and “The Kid Is Hot Tonite.” The following year’s Get Lucky brought a larger audience through “Working for the Weekend,” “When It’s Over,” and “Lucky Ones.” Keep It Up continued the success in 1983 with “Hot Girls in Love” and “Queen of the Broken Hearts.” Their red leather image, energetic concerts, and frequent appearances on rock radio and television made Loverboy one of Canada’s most recognizable bands.
Loverboy’s music also found a home in movies and special events. The band contributed “Nothing’s Gonna Stop You Now” to the 1984 Olympic music collection, “Destruction” to the soundtrack of Giorgio Moroder’s version of Metropolis, and “Heaven in Your Eyes” to Top Gun. Lovin’ Every Minute of It and Wildside added more concert favorites, while the 1989 compilation Big Ones introduced three new songs. After a break and a reunion, the original lineup recorded Six in 1997, its first album of new material in a decade.
Bassist Scott Smith’s death in 2000 was a painful chapter in the band’s history, but Reno, Dean, Johnson, and Frenette continued with bassist Ken Sinnaeve. Loverboy returned to the studio for Just Getting Started in 2007, followed by Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival in 2012 and Unfinished Business in 2014. Later singles included “Hurtin’,” “Some Like It Hot,” “Stop the Rain,” “Gimme Back My Life,” and “Release.” Beyond the familiar hits, the band’s soundtrack songs, archival recordings, and album cuts reveal a catalog worth exploring in full.
