Alice In Chains made harmony sound haunted. Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley could lock their voices together until melody and dread became inseparable, while Sean Kinney’s drumming and the bass work of Mike Starr and Mike Inez gave the songs a physical weight that survived every shift in the band’s history. Alice In Chains originated in Seattle, Washington, in 1987, after guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell connected with singer Layne Staley. Drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr completed the early lineup. The band quickly distinguished itself from its Seattle contemporaries through a darker blend of heavy metal, alternative rock, acoustic music, and tightly arranged vocal harmonies.

After signing with Columbia Records, Alice In Chains released Facelift in 1990. “Man in the Box,” “We Die Young,” “Bleed the Freak,” and “Sea of Sorrow” introduced the band to a national audience. The acoustic EP Sap followed before Dirt arrived in 1992 with “Would?,” “Rooster,” “Them Bones,” “Down in a Hole,” and “Angry Chair.”

Mike Inez replaced Starr during the Dirt era and became part of the lineup that recorded Jar of Flies, the first EP to debut at number one on the Billboard 200. “No Excuses,” “I Stay Away,” “Nutshell,” and “Don’t Follow” revealed how effectively the band could create tension without relying on the full force of its electric sound.

The self-titled Alice in Chains album appeared in 1995, followed by the group’s celebrated MTV Unplugged performance. Personal and health struggles then limited the band’s activity. Staley returned to record “Get Born Again” and “Died,” but his death in 2002 ended the original vocal partnership that had defined the group.

Alice In Chains resumed performing with William DuVall and released Black Gives Way to Blue in 2009. DuVall and Cantrell shared vocal duties across that album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, and Rainier Fog. Songs including “Check My Brain,” “Your Decision,” “Hollow,” “Stone,” “The One You Know,” and “Never Fade” established the renewed lineup as a continuing creative force rather than a recreation of the past.

The wider catalog reaches beyond the six studio albums. Music Bank collected demos, alternate mixes, rarities, and the final Staley-era studio recordings; the Last Action Hero soundtrack introduced “What the Hell Have I” and “A Little Bitter”; and the band later recorded “Tears” for the anniversary edition of Rush’s 2112.

Alice In Chains remains one of rock music’s most recognizable and influential bands because its songs never treat heaviness as a purely sonic effect. The weight comes equally from the riffs, harmonies, silences, and lyrics, creating music that can feel brutal, intimate, exhausted, and defiant at the same time.
