Aretha Franklin’s career stands as one of the defining achievements in American music. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, she grew up in a household filled with gospel, music, and civil rights activism. Her father, the Reverend C. L. Franklin, was a nationally known preacher whose New Bethel Baptist Church welcomed prominent gospel singers and movement leaders. Aretha began singing in the church as a child and made the recordings that became Songs of Faith when she was fourteen.

Her move into secular music began after she signed with Columbia Records in 1960. Early albums including Aretha: With the Ray Bryant Combo and The Electrifying Aretha Franklin revealed her command of jazz, blues, standards, and popular song, although the major commercial breakthrough she was seeking did not arrive during those years. In 1966, she left Columbia for Atlantic Records and entered the period that would transform both her career and the sound of soul music.

Released in 1967, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You launched Franklin into international stardom. Her recording of “Respect” reached number one and became inseparable from the language of dignity, civil rights, and women’s independence. “Baby, I Love You,” “Chain of Fools,” “Think,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” followed in a remarkable succession of recordings that joined gospel intensity with rhythmic authority, vulnerability, and conviction.

Franklin remained prolific throughout the 1970s. Albums including Spirit in the Dark, Young, Gifted and Black, Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky), and Let Me in Your Life demonstrated how easily she could move between soul, gospel, jazz, pop, blues, and contemporary songwriting. “Rock Steady,” “Day Dreaming,” “Spanish Harlem,” and “Until You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)” extended her run of essential recordings, while Amazing Grace became the landmark gospel release of her career.

Across her career, Franklin released thirty-eight studio albums, along with the Sparkle soundtrack and a major body of live, gospel, compilation, and collaborative work. After a quieter commercial period near the end of the 1970s, she returned to the upper reaches of the charts with “Jump to It,” “Freeway of Love,” “Who’s Zoomin’ Who?,” and “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” her number-one duet with George Michael.

Franklin won eighteen Grammy Awards and received both the Grammy Legend Award and the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1987, she became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and was honored by the Kennedy Center.

Her importance reached far beyond record sales and awards. “Respect” became a demand for dignity that crossed musical, political, and generational lines, while Franklin herself supported the civil rights movement and used her public stature on behalf of social causes. Her performances carried the authority of someone who understood that gospel, soul, and the struggle for equality were deeply connected.

Franklin was also an accomplished pianist, songwriter, arranger, and producer who took an active role in shaping her recordings. Her command of the keyboard was central to many of her greatest performances, and her ability to reinterpret another writer’s song could make it sound newly written for her voice and experience.

Her later years brought renewed recognition and unforgettable public appearances. At the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors, her performance of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” became one of the most celebrated television moments of her final decade. Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics (2014) was her final studio album. The 2017 release A Brand New Me paired archival Franklin vocals with newly recorded orchestral arrangements by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

When Aretha Franklin died in 2018, tributes from around the world reflected the scale of her impact. Her title as the Queen of Soul was not simply an honorific; it recognized a singer, musician, and cultural figure whose work permanently changed gospel, R&B, soul, pop, and the possibilities of vocal performance.

The list below preserves the supplied studio-album catalog while adding the omitted 1986 Aretha album, major non-album singles, soundtrack recordings, collaborations, early gospel recordings, and officially released archival songs. Ordinary remixes, instrumental versions, spoken introductions, and most live repetitions of songs already represented by studio recordings are excluded.
