Long Island’s basement-show circuit became Brand New’s foundation, and the band’s early lineup chemistry came directly out of that local scene. Brand New formed in 2000 in Merrick, New York. Jesse Lacey, Garrett Tierney, and Brian Lane had played together in the Levittown band the Rookie Lot, and they recruited guitarist Vincent Accardi after Lacey left his role as the founding bassist in Taking Back Sunday. The group’s first show took place at a Garden City bowling alley as the opener for Silent Majority, and Brand New quickly built momentum by playing with bands including Midtown and Glassjaw while self-releasing a four-song demo.

A label deal followed almost immediately. Brand New signed with Triple Crown Records shortly after its second show. Before that, the band had recorded a demo for Warner Bros. Records, and Lacey wrote “Last Chance to Lose Your Keys” at the label’s office as a potential single. Warner Bros. passed, and Brand New moved forward with Triple Crown. The debut album, Your Favorite Weapon, was produced by Mike Sapone and established the band’s early pop-punk identity. “Jude Law and a Semester Abroad” was the album’s only official single and received airplay on MTV2 and Fuse.

The second album, Deja Entendu, arrived in 2003 and marked an intentional stylistic expansion as the band incorporated indie rock influences. The record produced “The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows” and “Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades,” both of which reached the UK Singles Chart. Deja Entendu was eventually certified Gold in the United States, and it established Brand New as a band whose audience followed it through substantial musical change. The group also toured the United Kingdom during this period and appeared at the first Download Festival in 2003.

A turning point came when unfinished recordings from the sessions for the band’s major-label debut leaked online. Brand New reworked the material and released The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me in 2006. The album was later certified Gold, while “Jesus Christ” reached Number 30 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. The fourth album, Daisy, followed in 2009, debuted at Number 6 on the Billboard 200, and moved the band further into post-hardcore and noise-rock territory.

Brand New’s later era was defined by long gaps, surprise releases, and greater control over its business. In 2008, the band started Procrastinate! Music Traitors, signing Kevin Devine as its first outside artist and reissuing his 2006 album Put Your Ghost to Rest. Brand New officially released Leaked Demos 2006, 3 Demos, Reworked, “Mene,” and “I Am a Nightmare” during 2016 before surprise-releasing Science Fiction in August 2017. The album debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming the band’s first chart-topping album.
