Crown Lands formed in Southwestern Ontario in 2015 after Cody Bowles and Kevin Comeau bonded over a shared love of classic rock and progressive music. The duo built its sound around an unusually large musical footprint for two people, with Bowles handling lead vocals, drums, percussion, and flutes while Comeau covers guitars, bass, keyboards, and synthesizers. Early Crown Lands music drew heavily from blues, folk, hard rock, and psychedelic rock, while the influence of Rush gradually pushed the pair toward increasingly ambitious progressive arrangements.

The duo’s first releases were the Mantra EP in 2016 and Rise Over Run in 2017. Crown Lands continued developing through collaborations, touring, and the acoustic Wayward Flyers Volume 1 EP before releasing their self-titled debut album in 2020. Produced by Dave Cobb, Crown Lands featured “Spit It Out,” “Leadfoot,” “Howlin’ Back,” “End Of The Road,” “Forest Song,” and “Sun Dance.” The album helped Crown Lands earn the 2021 Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year.

The band’s progressive side moved to the foreground with the 2021 releases “Context: Fearless Pt. I” and “Right Way Back,” followed by the White Buffalo material and the long-form composition “The Oracle.” That direction reached full scale on Fearless in 2023. Produced primarily by David Bottrill, the album combined extended progressive pieces such as “Starlifter: Fearless Pt. II” with shorter songs including “Dreamer Of The Dawn,” “The Shadow,” “Reflections,” “Penny,” and “Lady Of The Lake.”

Crown Lands shifted into instrumental world-building with Ritual I and Ritual II in 2025, two companion EPs created while Bowles and Comeau were developing their next studio album. That album became Apocalypse, released in May 2026 through InsideOutMusic. Built as a concept record connected to the universe of Fearless, it includes the 19-minute title composition along with “Through the Looking Glass,” “Blackstar,” “Foot Soldier of the Syndicate,” “The Fall,” “The Revenants I,” and “Proclamation I.” Alongside the main releases, Crown Lands have also recorded acoustic reinterpretations, classic-song covers, and collaborations that show the breadth of the duo’s work outside their studio albums.
