D’Angelo was born Michael Eugene Archer in Richmond, Virginia, where gospel music became the foundation of his musical life. His father was a Pentecostal minister, and D’Angelo learned piano by ear while playing in church. As a teenager, he developed his songwriting and performance skills before winning Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater three consecutive times.

His first major industry breakthrough came through Black Men United’s 1994 recording “U Will Know,” which he co-wrote and co-produced. The following year, Brown Sugar introduced his own voice through the title track, “Lady,” “Cruisin’,” “Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine,” and a collection of songs that joined gospel harmony, jazz, funk, hip-hop, and classic soul without sounding bound to any earlier era.

Voodoo arrived in 2000 after years of sessions with musicians connected to the Soulquarians collective. Its loose rhythmic feel, layered vocals, and live instrumentation gave songs such as “Devil’s Pie,” “Left & Right,” “Send It On,” “The Root,” and “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” a sound that remained deeply influential. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 and earned Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

The attention surrounding “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” also changed the way D’Angelo was perceived in public, often shifting discussion away from his musicianship and toward his image. Personal struggles and a retreat from the spotlight followed, although he continued contributing to recordings by artists including Common, Raphael Saadiq, Snoop Dogg, Roy Hargrove, Q-Tip, Mark Ronson, and J Dilla.

D’Angelo returned in December 2014 with Black Messiah, credited to D’Angelo and the Vanguard. The album brought funk, rock, gospel, protest music, and densely arranged soul together in songs including “Ain’t That Easy,” “The Charade,” “Really Love,” “Prayer,” and “Another Life.” It won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, while “Really Love” won Best R&B Song.

Later recordings included “Unshaken” from Red Dead Redemption 2, Rapsody’s “Ibtihaj,” and the 2024 collaboration “I Want You Forever” with Jeymes Samuel and Jay-Z. These releases extended a catalog that was small in volume but unusually broad in influence, reaching musicians working in soul, hip-hop, jazz, rock, gospel, and alternative R&B.

D’Angelo died on October 14, 2025, at age fifty-one after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Musicians and listeners across generations responded with tributes to his voice, instrumental ability, studio vision, and refusal to separate the spiritual, sensual, political, and experimental sides of Black music.

In the months after his death, Questlove said work was moving forward on a posthumous album drawn from material D’Angelo had been developing. Whatever form that music eventually takes, Brown Sugar, Voodoo, Black Messiah, and his carefully chosen collaborations already form one of the most consequential bodies of work in modern soul.
