Emerging from the post-grunge boom of the late ’90s, Godsmack has cemented itself as a formidable force in the hard rock and heavy metal scene. Formed in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1995, the band’s genesis was led by frontman Sully Erna, whose musical vision has propelled Godsmack to significant heights in the rock music pantheon.

Godsmack’s eponymous major-label debut album was released in 1998, a powerful statement that set the tone for their gritty, intense sound. This record, spearheaded by the single “Whatever,” quickly established the band’s presence in the rock music scene, resonating with fans of heavy, aggressive music. Since then, Godsmack has released a total of eight full-length studio albums, along with EPs, live albums, and compilations, each contributing to their legacy and influence in the genre. Their eighth studio album, Lighting Up the Sky, was released in 2023.

The significance of Godsmack in the music business is underscored by their commercial success, critical acclaim, and a dedicated fanbase. Their achievements include multiple Billboard chart-topping records, Grammy nominations, and a reputation for electrifying live performances. This acclaim is not just a testament to their musical prowess but also to their resilience and adaptability in the ever-changing landscape of rock music.

Godsmack’s sound, characterized by its heavy riffs, dark lyrical themes, and Erna’s distinctive voice, draws inspiration from the likes of Alice in Chains and Metallica, blending the doom-laden grunge aesthetic with the precision and aggression of thrash metal. This synthesis has not only defined their musical identity but has also influenced a new generation of bands, contributing to the evolution of hard rock and metal.

Godsmack entered a new era after longtime guitarist Tony Rombola and drummer Shannon Larkin departed. The band’s current lineup features Sully Erna, bassist Robbie Merrill, guitarist Sam Koltun, and drummer Mike Mangini. As we reflect on Godsmack’s enduring impact and their contribution to the soundtrack of a generation, we present the complete list of musicians who have been part of the band’s history.

Sully Erna

Sully Erna is the charismatic frontman and founding member of Godsmack, having been with the band since its inception in 1995. As the lead vocalist and primary songwriter, Erna’s distinctive voice and lyrical prowess have been central to Godsmack’s sound and success. He has played on all of Godsmack’s albums, contributing not just vocals but also his skills as a drummer, guitarist, and keyboardist. Erna’s work with Godsmack includes notable albums such as the self-titled debut Godsmack (1998), Awake (2000), Faceless (2003), When Legends Rise (2018), and Lighting Up the Sky (2023). Beyond Godsmack, Sully Erna has also carved out a solo career, with his debut solo album Avalon released in 2010, showcasing a more eclectic and softer side of his musical talents.

Robbie Merrill

Robbie Merrill is the original bassist for Godsmack and has been with the band since its formation. His bass lines provide the foundational groove and rhythm that underpin Godsmack’s heavy sound. Merrill’s contributions can be heard on all of the band’s albums, where his bass playing complements the band’s dynamic range from aggressive rock anthems to more subdued and melodic tracks. His presence has been consistent throughout the band’s history, making him a key component of their sound and success.

Sam Koltun

Sam Koltun joined Godsmack’s live lineup after Tony Rombola stepped away from the band and became the band’s new lead guitarist as Godsmack entered its next era. Koltun had previously worked with Dorothy and other hard rock acts before joining Godsmack. His guitar work became part of the band’s touring sound before he was confirmed as the guitarist moving forward in 2026.

Mike Mangini

Mike Mangini joined Godsmack’s 2026 lineup as drummer after the brief tenure of Wade Murff. Mangini, widely known for his years with Dream Theater and his extensive career as a drummer and educator, made his live debut with Godsmack in June 2026. His arrival placed him alongside Sully Erna, Robbie Merrill, and Sam Koltun in the band’s current lineup.
