Hank Williams Jr. came into country music with one of the most recognizable names in its history, but he developed a musical identity of his own. Born Randall Hank Williams in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1949, he performed his father’s songs as a child and began making records while still a teenager. His early MGM albums featured honky-tonk classics, country ballads, cowboy songs, and recordings made with other performers.

During the 1970s, Williams moved beyond the expectation that he would simply follow in Hank Williams’s footsteps. His music increasingly drew on Southern rock, blues, and country traditions, particularly after the serious mountain-climbing accident he survived in 1975. Records such as Family Tradition, Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, and Habits Old and New helped establish the outspoken Bocephus persona associated with his biggest hits.

His catalog includes A Country Boy Can Survive, All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down), Dixie on My Mind, Country State of Mind, and Born to Boogie. It also reaches much further than country radio singles, taking in instrumental performances, the spoken-word Luke the Drifter Jr. albums, collaborations with other country legends, and an extensive body of album material. His work has received major country-music honors, including induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Williams continued recording and performing into the twenty-first century. Old School, New Rules appeared in 2012, followed by It’s About Time in 2016 and the blues-oriented Rich White Honky Blues in 2022, produced by Dan Auerbach. Across these recordings, listeners can follow his development from an interpreter of traditional country songs into a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and enduring country-rock performer.
