Noah Kahan turned a childhood spent on a 133-acre tree farm in Strafford, Vermont, into the foundation of a career defined by raw storytelling and deeply personal songwriting. Growing up in a rural setting with a small-town perspective, he began writing songs at the age of eight, channeling his emotions into music long before he knew it would lead to national recognition. By his teenage years, he was posting original songs online, slowly gaining a grassroots following. His ability to capture the bittersweet nostalgia of youth and personal struggles caught the attention of Republic Records, and in 2017, he signed his first major-label deal.
His breakthrough arrived in 2018 with the release of Hurt Somebody, a song that took on new life when he re-recorded it as a duet with Julia Michaels. The track charted internationally and earned gold certification, setting the stage for Kahan’s career as a rising folk-pop star. His debut full-length album, Busyhead (2019), built upon this success, featuring introspective songs like “False Confidence” and “Mess.” With a mix of confessional lyrics and catchy melodies, the album established Kahan as a distinctive voice in the singer-songwriter world.
Kahan continued to evolve with I Was / I Am (2021), a more sonically ambitious album that explored themes of self-doubt, anxiety, and resilience. Tracks such as “Part of Me” and “Godlight” showcased his expanding musical palette, blending folk storytelling with pop production. However, it was his 2022 album Stick Season that cemented his status as a major force in modern folk music. The title track, “Stick Season,” became a viral sensation, earning widespread acclaim for its poetic depiction of seasonal change, heartbreak, and longing. The album’s themes resonated deeply with listeners, leading to a deluxe version titled Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever) in 2023.
With Stick Season propelling him into mainstream success, Kahan earned multiple accolades, including a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The album’s commercial and critical success led to sold-out tours and collaborations with artists like Hozier, Post Malone, and Kacey Musgraves. His distinctive ability to craft songs that feel both deeply personal and universally relatable has made him a favorite among fans of indie-folk and singer-songwriter music.
