Steve Perry became one of American rock’s defining voices during his years with Journey, but his solo recordings tell a story that goes well beyond the band’s enormous success. Born in Hanford, California, Perry joined Journey in 1977 and helped bring a melodic, emotionally direct style to the group’s music. His performances on songs such as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Open Arms,” and “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” made him one of the era’s most recognizable singers. His recording career gave him the chance to explore those instincts without sounding exactly like Journey.
His 1984 solo debut, Street Talk, was a major success, led by “Oh Sherrie” and “Foolish Heart.” The album also included “Strung Out,” “She’s Mine,” and several memorable deep cuts, blending rock arrangements with the soul and R&B influences Perry had loved since childhood. A second full-length album did not arrive until 1994, when For the Love of Strange Medicine brought him back with “You Better Wait,” “Missing You,” and “Young Hearts Forever.” Even some of the music recorded between those projects eventually reached listeners through later compilations and expanded editions.
The years away from recording were unusually long. Perry returned in 2018 with Traces, a deeply personal album built around loss, memory, and renewal. “No Erasin’,” “We’re Still Here,” and “Most of All” introduced a more reflective chapter of his songwriting, while the expanded album and Traces (Alternate Versions & Sketches) revealed additional songs and intimate acoustic versions. He then turned to music that had filled his childhood home, recording familiar seasonal songs for The Season and expanding that project with fresh material, including a remarkable duet with his late father, Ray Perry, on The Season 3.
Perry’s catalog also reaches outside his own albums. He shared the microphone with Kenny Loggins on “Don’t Fight It,” sang for the Quest for Camelot soundtrack, appeared on recordings by other musicians, and returned to songs from his Journey years in new collaborations. His appearance with Dolly Parton on “Open Arms” and his 2025 duet with Willie Nelson on “Faithfully” showed how naturally his voice could fit alongside performers from different musical traditions. Those collaborations belong beside his solo records when tracing the full range of his recorded work.
The songs below follow Perry’s solo albums, official rarities, B-sides, significant alternate recordings, soundtrack contributions, and notable guest-vocal performances. Songs originally recorded by Journey are represented only when a separately released collaborative or remix recording warrants an individual entry. The accompanying discography separates his core albums from archival projects, compilations, EPs, and other significant releases.
