The Muffs formed in Southern California in 1991 around singer, guitarist, and songwriter Kim Shattuck and guitarist Melanie Vammen, both former members of the Pandoras. Bassist Ronnie Barnett and drummer Criss Crass completed the original lineup, which developed a fast, melodic sound that joined punk guitar, power-pop hooks, humor, and Shattuck’s instantly recognizable rasp and scream.

The band’s earliest singles were “New Love,” “Guilty,” and “I Need You.” Those releases also introduced “I Don’t Like You,” “Right in the Eye,” and “Beat Your Heart Out,” while compilation appearances such as “Get Me Out of Here,” “You Can Cry If You Want,” and “Brand New Chevy” documented the group before its major-label debut.

The Muffs arrived through Warner Bros. Records in 1993. “Lucky Guy,” “Saying Goodbye,” “Everywhere I Go,” “Big Mouth,” and “From Your Girl” established the band’s combination of direct songwriting and distorted pop. Crass left after the album, Jim Laspesa filled in on tour, and Roy McDonald became the permanent drummer in 1994. Vammen also departed, leaving Shattuck, Barnett, and McDonald as the trio that recorded the remainder of the band’s studio catalog.

Blonder and Blonder followed in 1995 with “Sad Tomorrow,” “Oh Nina,” “Agony,” “Funny Face,” and “Red Eyed Troll.” The same year, the Muffs recorded Kim Wilde’s “Kids in America” for the Clueless soundtrack, giving the group its most widely recognized recording.

Happy Birthday to Me arrived in 1997 with Shattuck producing. “I’m a Dick,” “Outer Space,” “Crush Me,” “My Crazy Afternoon,” and “The Best Time Around” reflected a band increasingly confident in short, tightly arranged songs that moved easily between sarcasm, frustration, and melodic sweetness.

After leaving Warner Bros., the Muffs released Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow in 1999. “I Wish That I Could Be You,” “Silly People,” “Another Ugly Face,” and “Your Kiss” continued the trio’s loud power-pop approach. The same period produced “Happening,” “My Mind’s Eye,” and the thirty-four-second compilation track “Pimmel.”

The 2000 compilation Hamburger gathered early singles, covers, demos, outtakes, and compilation tracks. Kaboodle expanded that archival story in 2011, preserving material such as “Good Morning Good Coffee,” “Nothing for Me,” “You Make Me,” “And I’m Happiest,” and “I Don’t Know About You.”

The trio returned with Really Really Happy in 2004. The album presented a softer and more varied production style while retaining the band’s melodic identity. An expanded 2022 edition added bonus tracks and sixteen solo demos by Shattuck, also issued as New Improved Kim Shattuck Demos.

Whoop Dee Doo arrived in 2014 after the band resumed live activity. Songs including “Weird Boy Next Door,” “Up and Down Around,” “Paint by Numbers,” and “Like You Don’t See Me” showed that Shattuck, Barnett, and McDonald still sounded unmistakably like the Muffs after a decade away from the studio.

Kim Shattuck died on October 2, 2019, following a two-year battle with ALS. The Muffs released their seventh and final studio album, No Holiday, later that month. Its eighteen songs were written between 1991 and 2017 and ranged from full-band recordings to intimate home performances.
