THE RUNAWAYS STUDIO ALBUMS

The Runaways

Released March 1976

The band’s debut album featured a lineup of Cherie Currie, Joan Jett, Lita Ford and Sandy West. Jackie Fox was the band’s bass player at the time but supposably did not play bass on their debut album. The Runaways’ debut album inspired countless female rock musicians with their no holds back rock and roll attitude which was rare for an all-female band. They were all only around 16 years old at the time which the album’s liner credits made sure to mention. The album is filled with songs that would become Runaways classics like “Cherry Bomb,” “You Drive Me Wild,” and the album’s dramatic closer “Dead End Justice.”

Queens of Noise

Released January 1977

The band’s follow up to their debut album was a bit of a more mature affair that also showcased the vocal powers of Joan Jett who would begin to be defined as the band’s front person as eventually, Cherrie Currie would leave the band.  Joan Jett sang lead on five tracks which were equal to the number of lead vocals Cherrie Currie performed on the album. The album featured a lineup of Cherie Currie on vocals, Joan Jett on vocals and guitar, Lita Ford on lead guitar, Sandy West on drums and Jackie Fox on bass

Waitin’ for the Night

Released October 7, 1977

It’s sad that the Runaways only released two studio albums with their original lineup. On the band’s third album, there were multiple lineup changes. Cherrie Curie left the band to pursue a solo career. Bassist Jakie Fox was released by Viki Blue. Joan Jett would now stand front and center singing lead on all the tracks. Joan Jett also wrote most of the songs on the album with the exception of a pair that were written by Lita Ford.

And Now… The Runaways

Released December 16, 1978

And Now… The Runaways would become the last Runaway’s final studio album. The center status that Joan Jett had taken on the band’s third album was erased on their fourth as the entire first side of the album featured no Joan Jett songs. In fact, Joan Jett only wrote two songs released on the album. Tensions were high in the band and management which eventually led to the band breaking up.
