The Script emerged from Dublin, Ireland, after Danny O’Donoghue and Mark Sheehan, who had previously been members of the late-1990s group Mytown, began developing a new project with drummer Glen Power. After securing a deal with Phonogenic, an imprint of Sony Music, the trio moved between Dublin and London while shaping a sound that blended pop, rock, R&B, and soul. Their self-titled debut album, The Script, was released in August 2008 and led by singles including “We Cry” and “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved.” The record debuted at number one in Ireland and the United Kingdom, while “Breakeven” helped introduce the band to a wider American audience.
The follow-up album, Science & Faith, arrived in 2010 and solidified the band’s standing as an international act. It topped the charts in Ireland and the United Kingdom and reached number three on the Billboard 200 in the United States. The album featured “For the First Time” and “Nothing,” both of which maintained the group’s trademark combination of introspection and soaring choruses. Science & Faith continued to expand The Script’s global audience by balancing polished production with direct emotional writing.
In 2012, the band released #3, a title that marked its third studio album and introduced one of its biggest hits, “Hall of Fame,” a collaboration with will.i.am. The song became The Script’s first number-one single in Ireland and reached the Top 10 in several countries, including the United Kingdom. #3 continued the group’s run of successful albums and further established its presence on adult contemporary and pop-rock radio.
The fourth album, No Sound Without Silence, was released in 2014. Much of the material was developed while the band was touring, and the record returned to the live-band energy that had shaped its earliest work. It featured “Superheroes,” “No Good in Goodbye,” “Man on a Wire,” and “The Energy Never Dies.” The album debuted at number one in Ireland and the United Kingdom and continued the band’s focus on personal growth, resilience, and emotional vulnerability.
In 2017, The Script released Freedom Child, which marked a shift toward more contemporary pop production. The album reached number one in Ireland and the United Kingdom, while “Rain” received extensive radio play. Two years later, the band returned with Sunsets & Full Moons. Released in 2019, the record moved back toward the direct, emotionally charged writing associated with the band’s earlier albums and was shaped in part by the death of O’Donoghue’s mother.
In 2021, the group released Tales from The Script: Greatest Hits, which included the new song “I Want It All.” The band also revisited its catalog through the Acoustic Sessions series, issuing acoustic versions of songs from several eras. Tragedy struck in April 2023 with the death of founding member Mark Sheehan at the age of 46.
The Script continued with O’Donoghue and Power, officially expanding the lineup to include longtime touring bassist Ben Sargeant and guitarist Ben Weaver. The band released Satellites, its seventh studio album, in August 2024. The 12-song record included “Both Ways,” “At Your Feet,” “Inside Out,” “Home Is Where the Hurt Is,” and the title track.
In 2026, The Script announced its eighth studio album, The User’s Guide to Being Human, scheduled for release on August 14. The band released “Man in the Arena” in May and “The Crowd Was Singing Wonderwall” in July. The announced 11-song album continues the group’s emphasis on emotional connection, perseverance, and expansive pop-rock melodies.
The Script have received recognition from the World Music Awards, Meteor Ireland Music Awards, BMI Pop Awards, and other organizations. Their emotionally direct songwriting, consistent chart performance, and loyal international following have secured the band a lasting place in modern pop-rock. Outside of the group, Danny O’Donoghue also reached a wider television audience through his work as a coach on The Voice UK.
