Third Eye Blind took shape in San Francisco, California, in 1993, built around the songwriting instincts of frontman Stephan Jenkins. Before the band existed, Jenkins was one half of the rap duo Puck and Natty alongside musician Herman Anthony Chunn, who performed under the name Zen. The pair placed “Just Wanna Be Your Friend” on the soundtrack for the television drama Beverly Hills, 90210. During this period, Jenkins wrote an early version of what eventually became “Semi-Charmed Life.”
After that duo dissolved, Jenkins pursued a rock band instead. He cycled through collaborators and drummers before settling into a lineup with guitarist Kevin Cadogan, bassist Arion Salazar, and drummer Brad Hargreaves. That group signed with Elektra Records in 1996 through an agreement reported at the time as one of the largest publishing deals extended to an unsigned artist.
The band released its self-titled debut album in April 1997. The record eventually sold more than six million copies in the United States, powered by “Semi-Charmed Life,” which reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100. “How’s It Going to Be” and “Jumper” followed it into the Top 10, while “Graduate” and “Losing a Whole Year” helped establish the album as one of the defining alternative-rock releases of its era.
Third Eye Blind’s second album, Blue, followed in November 1999 and was certified platinum. Its best-known single, “Never Let You Go,” reached number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100. The band continued with Out of the Vein in 2003, Ursa Major in 2009, Dopamine in 2015, Screamer in 2019, and Our Bande Apart in 2021.
The band also released several projects outside its seven studio albums. The three-song Red Star EP arrived in 2008, followed by We Are Drugs in 2016 and the seven-song covers collection Thanks for Everything in 2018. In 2022, Third Eye Blind reworked songs from across its catalog for Unplugged, which also introduced “Second Born” in an acoustic arrangement.
That run of recordings earned Third Eye Blind a steady stream of industry recognition. The band won a 1997 Billboard Music Award for “Semi-Charmed Life” and received multiple California Music Awards for its debut album, songwriting, singles, and live presence. The band’s worldwide sales have been reported at more than twelve million records.
Third Eye Blind has also used its platform for causes outside the studio. In 2011, the band released “If There Ever Was a Time” in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement. It has performed at benefits connected with breast-cancer support and Musicians on Call, while Jenkins has used concerts and public appearances to address political, scientific, and LGBTQ+ issues.
Jenkins also stepped outside the band to produce Vanessa Carlton’s album Harmonium, an experience that influenced how he approached his own songwriting and studio work.
Third Eye Blind continued releasing new music after Our Bande Apart. “Like A Lullaby,” recorded with producer Eric Valentine, arrived in 2025 and became the band’s most recent original single. The complete list below brings together songs from the seven studio albums, expanded editions, EPs, acoustic releases, covers, demos, standalone singles, and featured appearances.
