Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Brownsville, Tennessee, on November 26, 1939, and spent much of her childhood in Nutbush. After moving to the St. Louis area as a teenager, she began visiting clubs where Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm performed. Her forceful voice earned her a place in the group, and the 1960 recording “A Fool in Love” launched the partnership that became the Ike & Tina Turner Revue.

Ike & Tina Turner became one of the most explosive live acts of the 1960s and early 1970s, recording songs including “River Deep – Mountain High,” “Nutbush City Limits,” and their Grammy-winning version of “Proud Mary.” Behind the public success, Tina endured years of domestic abuse. She left Ike in 1976 and completed their divorce in 1978, rebuilding her career through television appearances, touring, and a series of solo recordings.

Turner’s early solo work included Tina Turns the Country On! (1974), Acid Queen (1975), Rough (1978), and Love Explosion (1979). The collection Good Hearted Woman, drawn from country sessions recorded during the 1970s, also became part of her solo catalog. These releases demonstrated her ability to move between country, blues, soul, rock, and pop long before her international solo breakthrough.

That breakthrough arrived with Private Dancer in 1984. The album included “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “Better Be Good to Me,” “Private Dancer,” and “I Can’t Stand the Rain.” “What’s Love Got to Do with It” became her first solo number-one single in the United States and earned Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 1985 Grammy Awards.

Turner followed with Break Every Rule (1986), Foreign Affair (1989), Wildest Dreams (1996), and Twenty Four Seven (1999). Songs including “Typical Male,” “The Best,” “Steamy Windows,” “GoldenEye,” “Whatever You Want,” and “When the Heartache Is Over” extended her success across several decades. Her concerts combined vocal power, tightly arranged rock and soul, and a stage presence that earned her the enduring title Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Turner earned eight competitive Grammy Awards, received the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and had three recordings inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. She entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Ike Turner in 1991 and was inducted again as a solo artist in 2021, recognizing the scale and influence of the career she built independently.

Her work also extended into film. Turner appeared as the Acid Queen in Tommy and played Aunty Entity in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which produced the hit “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome).” Her autobiography I, Tina inspired the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do with It, while her life story later became the basis of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.

Turner retired from touring after completing her 50th Anniversary Tour in 2009. She later appeared in the 2021 documentary Tina, which examined her career, personal history, and decision to step away from public life. She died at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, on May 24, 2023, at the age of 83.

Her solo catalog has continued to receive extensive archival attention. The fortieth-anniversary edition of Private Dancer introduced the previously unreleased studio recording “Hot for You Baby” in 2025, while the thirtieth-anniversary edition of Wildest Dreams followed in 2026. The list below brings together every song from the solo album sequence represented in this article, along with that newly released archival recording.
