Waylon Jennings helped reshape American country music by challenging Nashville’s conventions and insisting on a sound that matched the force of his voice. Born in Littlefield, Texas, on June 15, 1937, he learned guitar as a child and worked in radio before joining Buddy Holly’s touring band. His deep baritone, rock-and-roll instincts, and taste for story-driven songs eventually became cornerstones of the outlaw country movement.
Jennings recorded during the early 1960s before signing with RCA Victor in 1965. The records he made from the mid-1960s onward introduced listeners to his interpretations of songs by Harlan Howard, Kris Kristofferson, Billy Joe Shaver, and many other writers. Albums including Honky Tonk Heroes, The Ramblin’ Man, and Dreaming My Dreams helped him gain greater artistic control and develop a hard-edged approach to country music.
His partnership with Willie Nelson yielded such enduring recordings as “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” and “Good Hearted Woman.” Jennings also recorded with his wife, Jessi Colter, and later joined Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson in the Highwaymen. Their collective recordings extended his influence well beyond his solo albums.
Jennings died on February 13, 2002, but his recording catalog continued to grow through live releases, archival collections, and recordings preserved by his family. In 2025, Shooter Jennings oversaw the release of Songbird, a collection of previously unheard performances. The 2026 single “Diamonds” introduced another forthcoming archival project, reflecting the enduring interest in Jennings’ remarkable musical legacy.
