Wednesday began in Asheville, North Carolina, in 2017 as the songwriting project of Karly Hartzman. Guitarist Daniel Gorham joined early in the project’s development, and the pair recorded the first full-length album, yep definitely, before Wednesday expanded into a full band. Over the next several years, Hartzman’s writing became the center of a sound that pulled together shoegaze, indie rock, grunge, country music, noise, and deeply specific stories from the American South.

The band released the self-titled Wednesday EP in 2019 and followed with I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone in 2020, the first Wednesday full-length recorded as a five-piece. The lineup during that period included Hartzman, Xandy Chelmis on lap and pedal steel, bassist Margo Schultz, drummer Alan Miller, and guitarist Daniel Gorham, with MJ Lenderman becoming an increasingly important collaborator before joining as a full member for Twin Plagues in 2021. That album pushed the band’s distorted guitars and country textures into a more fully formed style that Wednesday would continue to develop.

Wednesday’s 2022 covers album, Mowing the Leaves Instead of Piling ’em Up, made the band’s influences unusually explicit, moving from Gary Stewart and Roger Miller to Vic Chesnutt, Medicine, the Smashing Pumpkins, Drive-By Truckers, and Hotline TNT. The following year, Rat Saw God became the band’s first album for Dead Oceans and brought Wednesday a much wider audience through songs including “Bull Believer,” “Chosen to Deserve,” “Bath County,” and “Quarry.” Ethan Baechtold later replaced Schultz on bass, while Lenderman stepped away from touring in 2025 but continued contributing to Wednesday’s studio recordings.

Bleeds arrived in September 2025 and continued the band’s mix of place-specific storytelling, distorted rock, country phrasing, and moments of abrasive noise. One year later, Bleeds (Deluxe) added eight officially released remixes, alternate versions, and demos, including “June 2 (Early Version)” and “Poison the Sound (Demo).” Wednesday also appeared on Weezer’s 2026 song “We Might as Well Be Strangers.” The catalog below includes the band’s officially released studio recordings, EP tracks, covers, compilation appearances, collaborations, demos, remixes, and distinct alternate versions while avoiding unnecessary duplication of live performances already represented by regular studio recordings.
