Ian Paice Interview

Ian Paice stands as one of the most influential rock drummers of all time. As the longest-running member of the band Deep Purple, just about everyone on the planet has heard the man’s powerful drumming fuel some of the most legendary classic rock songs in history. So how does one prepare to interview such a rock giant who has probably been asked every question about Deep Purple’s music that one can imagine? The answer is simple: just focus on the present and the future, which the group made easy to do because this powerhouse of a band shows no sign of stopping in 2024.

Deep Purple is all set to release their new album, =1. One may ask the meaning behind the album’s new title, which I made sure to do. The band’s new single, “Portable Door,” was released on April 30, 2024. It’s pure vintage-sounding Deep Purple topped with a slice of modernity that creates an appeal for both old and new fans. In simple terms, it sounds freaking great. Once again, in the interview, I asked Ian to discuss the meaning behind the song’s title. From that point on, Ian discussed why the band has continued, what makes it all work, the experiences of adding a new guitar player in the phenomenal Simon McBride, and so much more. This is a very compelling interview that was a sheer joy to conduct. Ian is a super friendly musician who has given so much to the world with Deep Purple.

Deep Purple released their first album, Shades of Deep Purple, in 1968. Their newest album, =1, is the band’s twenty-third studio album. As all Deep Purple fans know, the band has gone through multiple lineup changes over the years, with Ian Paice being the only consistent member. The lineup for the band’s new album consists of Ian Gillan on vocals, Roger Glover on bass, Ian Paice on drums, Don Airey on keyboards, and Simon McBride on guitars. Deep Purple will be out on a worldwide tour promoting the album, playing shows in Europe and the United States. When the band hits the States in August, they will also be performing with Yes. You can check their tour schedule on the band’s website.  https://deeppurple.com/pages/tours
