While she was singing with the Dance Theater of Harlem chorus, she met Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen from GRP Records. They signed her to their label where she released her first album.

Angie was released in 1978. The album peaked at number 20 on the R&B charts and number 47 on the Billboard 200 charts. It features the single “This Time I’ll Be Sweeter.” The album was a hit for the songbird. Angel of the Night was released in 1979. The album would go on to sell more records than her previous work. The album peaked at number 10 on the R&B charts and number 34 on the Billboard 200 charts.
