As a talented singer aiming to influence people to encounter Jesus Christ through gospel music, Phil Wickham has had to overcome the odds to become one of the world’s most renowned contemporary Christian musicians. Phil was raised in a house full of musicians and was inspired to pursue music as a career after his pastor asked him to sing for a Saturday night youth group service. Although he always had a personal relationship with God, he felt a bigger desire to invest his time and resources into music that point people to God.
Phil Wickham has released ten albums throughout his career, with the latest album, Hymn of Heaven, released in 2021. Besides visiting numerous churches worldwide, Phil Wickham has also been nominated and won several Christian music awards, including the GMA Dove Awards for Worship Recorded Song of the Year. In 2014, Phil Wickham had to take a break from music production after he was diagnosed with a vocal injury that kept him out for more than a year.
During the first month after his surgery, he could not speak to allow the surgical site to heal. This made him doubt whether he would embark on his music career. However, through God’s grace, he made a comeback and released the album, Children of God in 2016. We have compiled a list of ten of his greatest songs of all time. Read through and listen to some cool gospel hits.
10. Shining
By the time Phil Wickham had hit 18 years, he had released his debut CD, which included the hit single, “Shining.” This song kicks off our list of the best Phil Wickham songs since it is the song that encouraged him to begin work on twelve other new songs for his self-titled album of 2006.
9. You Cannot Be Stopped
The mark of great worship songs is that they are meant to praise God and stir the faith in our hearts as we sing them. “You Cannot Be Stopped” reminds us of the eternal love that God has for us and that no evil plans can deter His plans from being accomplished in our lives. This song was written by Phil Wickham alongside Chris Quilala of Jesus Culture band. “You Cannot Be Stopped” is contained in Phil Wickham’s album with a similar name.
8. The Ascension
The Ascension is one of Phil Wickham’s greatest albums. Its significance is due to the fact that it solidified Phil Wickham’s position as one of the most innovative songwriters across the board. “The Ascension” is the first song in this album, and its main message is that we should seek to increase our personal relationship with God. He invites us to seek higher ground in search of God, and our lives will be changed once we make the Ascension.
7. The Secret Place
There are many great songs in Phil Wickham’s Children of God album, but this track happens to be one of my favorite. Do you always purpose to spend time in communion with God? How many times do you grab the Bible to read and just pray to God without necessarily asking for anything in particular? “The Secret Place” borrows heavily from the scripture, especially the books of Psalms, Mathew, and Corinthians.
6. Till I Found You
The majority of Phil Wickham’s songs are so inspiring. The idea behind “Till I Found You” came to Phil Wickham during his regular Wednesday fellowship meetings at Harvest Christian Fellowship. On this particular day, his pastor, Greg Laurie, called out people who wanted to be saved as is the norm.
Usually, three or four people give their life to Christ in each of these situations. However, on this day, a flood of people gave their lives to God, which is how Phil was inspired. He wrote the song to show how important a decision these people had made in starting a new relationship with God. “Till I Found You” was released in 2018 as the second track from the album Living Hope.
5. Safe
Phil Wickham often interacts with his fans to know their reaction to each of their songs. “Safe” is one of the songs that he admits most fans relate to so much. IN the song, he reminds people that the Lord who performed healing miracles in the past is the same God that lives today, and He still has as much power to do the same today.
The song received numerous positive reviews mainly due to its message and Phil’s incredible baritone, which overflows with passion as he sings the chorus. The song peaked at position 4 in Billboard’s Christian Songs chart and was one of the most downloaded Christian songs on iTunes.
4. You’re Beautiful
Phil Wickham’s second commercial album, Cannons, was a thing of beauty. “You’re Beautiful” is the eighth track from the 2007 hit album. According to Phil, the idea of the song came about at a worship youth camp where the preacher was talking about creation and God’s abounding love to all his creations. The lyrics and the melodies of this single are breathtaking.
3. Carry My Soul
It’s tough to choose the best Phil Wickham songs mainly because most of them are fantastic. In this song, he expresses his love for God through some imagery phrases and different verses from the Bible. The song was released in 2013 from the album Ascension.
2. Living Hope
“Living Hope” is arguably the greatest song in Phil Wickham’s music career. In fact, Phil says that it is the best song he has written. The song has been a major hit across many churches and peaked at position 7 in the CCLI Chart (Christian Copyright Licensing International.) In addition, it was certified gold by the RIAA and was voted the GMA Worship Recorded Song of the Year in 2019.
1.This Is Amazing Grace
The number one song in our list of the best Phil Wickham songs is “This Amazing Grace.” It is the lead single from Phil Wickham’s hit album The Ascension, released in 2013. The song is about God’s amazing grace and unfailing love for his people. It is a song that can encourage anyone going through a hard time overcoming life’s battles such as drug addiction and alcoholism. “This IS Amazing Grace” was named the best song on the Christian Airplay Chart of 2014 by Billboard and is certified platinum by RIAA.
