The Foo Fighters’ spirited and incredibly talented drummer Taylor Hawkins has died at the age of 50. No cause of death has yet been reported. Rock fans were gathered in Bogotá, Colombia, to see the Foo Fighters perform at the Festival Estereo Picnic when the news was announced that the Foo Fighters show had been canceled. At the time the festival announcers had not told the concertgoers the reason why the Foo Fighters had canceled the shows. Most fans found out a few hours later from social media announcements by the Foo Fighters.

On The Foo Fighters Twitter page, the band released the following statement. “The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever,” Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginable difficult time.”

Many rock fans had first discovered the talents of Taylor Hawkins when he was the drummer in Alanis Morissette’s band. Alanis Morissette had released a tour documentary in the mid-1990s that not only showcased the talents of Taylor Hawkins as a drummer, but also defined his dynamic and loving personality in many of the film’s behind the scenes episodes. It’s easy to tell why musicians loved being around Taylor Hawkins.

While Taylor Hawkins was most famous for his role as the drummer in the legendary Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Band The Foo Fighters, he was also involved in many other side projects and groups of his own. Taylor Hawkins founded the group Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders in the 2000s. Taylor Hawkins released three albums with the band in between his work with the Foo Fighters. The group also featured Chris Chaney on bass who had been in the Alanis Morrisette band with Taylor Hawkins.

Taylor Hawkins’s favorite band while growing up was the group, Queen. Hawkins has said in past interviews that it was Queen’s Roger Taylor who had inspired him to become a drummer. Both Roger Taylor and Brian May of Queen performed on the second Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders album entitled Red Light Fever. The album was released in 2010.

While the rock and roll world lost one of its greatest modern-day rock drummers last night, Dave Grohl lost his best friend, and a family lost their father. We will all miss Tayor Hawkins greatly.
