Primus was formed in El Sobrante, California, in 1984. Primus is recognized for its irreverent approach to music, often creating surreal and satirical narratives in its lyrics. Bassist and vocalist Les Claypool founded the band and has been its only constant member. Primus has released nine studio albums, several of which have received significant recognition. Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda both achieved Platinum certification in the United States, while Tales from the Punchbowl was certified Gold. The band’s most recent studio album remains The Desaturating Seven (2017), although Primus released the A Handful of Nuggs EP in 2026 and continued recording new material. Known for their energetic live performances and distinct sound, Primus has cultivated a dedicated fan base over the decades. The current lineup consists of Les Claypool, Larry “Ler” LaLonde, and drummer John “Hoffer” Hoffman.

Les Claypool

Les Claypool has been the charismatic frontman and bassist for Primus since its inception in 1984. Known for his highly original bass playing style, which includes tapping, flamenco-like strumming, and slapping, Claypool’s technique is integral to the band’s sound. He has played on all of Primus’s albums, contributing not only bass guitar but also vocals and occasional additional instruments. Beyond Primus, Claypool has an extensive solo career and has collaborated with artists including Tom Waits and Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett. He has also formed other groups such as Oysterhead with Trey Anastasio and Stewart Copeland.

Larry “Ler” LaLonde

Larry “Ler” LaLonde joined Primus in 1989, bringing experience from his previous band Possessed. As the guitarist, LaLonde’s eclectic playing style, which melds heavy metal, funk, and experimental music, complements Claypool’s bass perfectly. He made his Primus recording debut on the 1989 live album Suck on This and has played on all nine of the band’s studio albums, beginning with Frizzle Fry (1990). LaLonde’s contributions have been pivotal in shaping the band’s sound, featuring complex guitar work that navigates through various genres.

John “Hoffer” Hoffman

John “Hoffer” Hoffman joined Primus as the band’s drummer in 2025 following the departure of Tim “Herb” Alexander. Primus selected Hoffman after an open audition process that drew more than 6,100 submissions from drummers around the world. Hoffman quickly became part of the band’s live and recording lineup, contributing to new Primus material including the 2025 single “Little Lord Fentanyl” and the 2026 EP A Handful of Nuggs. He remained the drummer in Primus’s current lineup in 2026 as the band continued working on additional new material.

Tim “Herb” Alexander

Drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander became part of Primus’s classic lineup in 1989 and served three separate stints with the band: 1989–1996, 2003–2010, and 2013–2024. Known for his technical proficiency and powerful drumming style, Alexander played on many of Primus’s most successful albums, including Frizzle Fry, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Pork Soda, and Tales from the Punchbowl. He later returned for albums including Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble and The Desaturating Seven. Alexander left Primus again in October 2024, telling the band that he had lost his passion for playing. Outside Primus, Alexander has worked with bands such as A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.

Jay Lane

Jay Lane joined Primus during the band’s early Bay Area period in 1988, replacing Tim “Curveball” Wright. The lineup of Lane, Les Claypool, and Todd Huth recorded an early demo called Sausage, but Lane left before Primus recorded Suck on This. He returned to Primus in 2010 after Tim Alexander’s second departure and played on the band’s 2011 studio album Green Naugahyde. Lane left again in 2013, after which Alexander returned. Lane is also known for his work with Bob Weir’s RatDog and Furthur.

Bryan “Brain” Mantia

Bryan “Brain” Mantia had a brief early stint with Primus around 1989 and later became the band’s drummer after Tim Alexander’s first departure in 1996. Mantia played on the studio albums Brown Album (1997) and Antipop (1999), as well as the 1998 EP Rhinoplasty. His technical skill and groove-oriented drumming brought a different dimension to the band’s music during his tenure. Mantia remained with Primus until the band entered its hiatus in 2000 and returned for a special Primus performance in 2024. Beyond Primus, Mantia has worked with Guns N’ Roses, Buckethead, and numerous other projects.

Todd Huth

Todd Huth was a founding member of Primus, playing guitar from 1984 until his departure around the end of 1988. Huth and Les Claypool began the group during its earliest period under the name Primate before it became Primus. His guitar work appeared on the band’s early demos, including the Sausage demo recorded with Jay Lane, and he helped write early Primus material, including songs later recorded by the classic lineup. Huth left before the recording of the 1989 live album Suck on This. He later reunited with Claypool and Lane in the band Sausage.

Vince “Perm” Parker

Vince “Perm” Parker was one of the first drummers to play with Les Claypool and Todd Huth during the band’s formative period in 1984. After Claypool and Huth initially worked with a drum machine, Parker joined them and played on an early demo recorded while the group was still developing from Primate into Primus. His time with the band was brief but formed part of the earliest stage of Primus’s history.

Mark Edgar

Mark Edgar was another drummer in the group’s very early 1984 period, following Vince Parker and preceding Peter Libby in the succession of drummers who worked with Les Claypool and Todd Huth. His tenure came during the transition from the band’s original Primate identity into Primus and was extremely brief, but he is part of the early Primus family tree.

Peter Libby

Peter Libby played drums with Primus during the band’s early years from 1984 into 1986. Libby was part of the period when the group had settled on the Primus name and played on early demo recordings as Claypool and Todd Huth continued developing the band’s unusual rhythmic and musical identity. Robbie Bean eventually succeeded him.

Robbie Bean

Robbie Bean was a drummer for Primus during 1986. His stint was short-lived, but Bean was part of the band’s evolving lineup as Primus built its reputation in the Bay Area and searched for the rhythm-section chemistry that would define its later recordings.

Tim “Curveball” Wright

Tim “Curveball” Wright drummed for Primus from 1986 to 1988. His participation helped bridge the gap between the band’s initial experimental phase and its growing success in the Bay Area music scene. Wright played on the early Sucking Songs demo and helped the band develop through extensive rehearsing and live performances before Jay Lane took over the drum position in 1988.
