Complete List Of The Dead Boys Band Members

The Dead Boys were formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1976. Known for their aggressive style and raw energy, the band quickly became a staple of the New York City punk scene after relocating there. The original Dead Boys released two studio albums, Young, Loud and Snotty (1977) and We Have Come for Your Children (1978), before disbanding in 1979. They briefly reunited in the 1980s and again in 2004 and 2005. In 2017, Cheetah Chrome and Johnny Blitz launched another incarnation of the band and released Still Snotty: Young, Loud and Snotty at 40, a newly recorded version of the debut album. The Dead Boys have continued in later touring incarnations. Despite their relatively short initial run, the Dead Boys are considered one of the most influential punk bands of their era.

Stiv Bators

Stiv Bators, born Steven John Bator, was the lead vocalist for the Dead Boys from their formation in 1976 until their initial breakup in 1979. Bators was known for his wild stage antics and charismatic presence. He contributed to both of the band’s original studio albums, Young, Loud and Snotty and We Have Come for Your Children, and co-wrote several Dead Boys songs, including “Not Anymore” and “Ain’t Nothin’ to Do.” After the Dead Boys disbanded, Bators pursued a solo career and later joined the Lords of the New Church. He remained active in the music scene until his death in 1990.

Cheetah Chrome

Cheetah Chrome, born Gene O’Connor, was the lead guitarist for the Dead Boys from their inception in 1976. Chrome’s aggressive guitar style was a defining feature of the band’s sound. He played on both Young, Loud and Snotty and We Have Come for Your Children, co-writing many of the band’s songs. Before the Dead Boys, Chrome played with Rocket from the Tombs and later returned to that band’s reformed incarnation. He has also released solo work and remained a significant figure in the punk rock community. Chrome has continued to lead later incarnations of the Dead Boys.

Jimmy Zero

Jimmy Zero, born William Wilden, was the rhythm guitarist for the Dead Boys. He joined the band at its formation in 1976 and played on both of their original studio albums. Zero co-wrote many of the band’s songs, contributing to their raw and energetic sound. After the Dead Boys’ breakup, Zero continued to make music and later joined reunion projects with the band. His contributions to the punk genre remain influential.

Jeff Magnum

Jeff Magnum, born Jeff Halmagy, was the bassist for the Dead Boys from their formation in 1976. Magnum played on the band’s two original studio albums and was integral to their powerful live performances. After the band’s initial breakup, Magnum participated in later Dead Boys reunion performances, including the surviving-original-member reunions in 2004 and 2005. His work with the Dead Boys remains a key part of his musical legacy.

Johnny Blitz

Johnny Blitz, born John Madansky, was the drummer for the Dead Boys. He joined the band in 1976 and played on both Young, Loud and Snotty and We Have Come for Your Children. Blitz’s powerful drumming was a cornerstone of the band’s sound. After the Dead Boys disbanded, Blitz continued to play music and took part in various Dead Boys reunions. In 2017, he reunited with Cheetah Chrome for the band’s 40th-anniversary incarnation and played on Still Snotty: Young, Loud and Snotty at 40.

Replacement, Reunion, and Later Members

Throughout the years, several musicians have joined the Dead Boys for replacement roles, reunion tours, recordings, and later touring incarnations.

Frank Secich

Frank Secich joined the Dead Boys as a touring bassist in late 1979 after Jeff Magnum withdrew from a planned tour. Secich had already worked closely with Stiv Bators and later played on Bators’ solo album Disconnected. His time with the Dead Boys came during the band’s final touring period around the end of its original run rather than during the later reunion era.

George Cabaniss

George Cabaniss joined the Dead Boys as a touring guitarist after Cheetah Chrome broke his wrist during the late-1979 tour. Cabaniss remained part of the touring lineup that continued into 1980 alongside Stiv Bators, Frank Secich, and drummer David Quinton.

David Quinton

David Quinton joined the later touring lineup of the Dead Boys on drums after Johnny Blitz departed in 1980. Quinton subsequently worked with Stiv Bators, Frank Secich, and George Cabaniss on Bators’ solo album Disconnected.

Jason Kottwitz

Jason “Ginchy” Kottwitz joined the Dead Boys as a guitarist for the band’s 2017 reunion and 40th-anniversary period. He played alongside Cheetah Chrome, Johnny Blitz, vocalist Jake Hout, and bassist Ricky Rat and performed on the 2017 album Still Snotty: Young, Loud and Snotty at 40.

Jake Hout

Jake Hout took over lead vocal duties for the Dead Boys in 2017. His energetic performances paid tribute to the late Stiv Bators and helped bring the band’s music to a new generation of fans. Hout fronted the band through 2024.

Ricky Rat

Ricky Rat joined the Dead Boys as the bassist for the 2017 reunion incarnation. A veteran of the punk rock scene and a member of the Detroit-based Trash Brats, Rat played on Still Snotty: Young, Loud and Snotty at 40 and participated in the band’s later touring period.

Monk Burris

Monk Burris played guitar with the Dead Boys during the band’s later touring incarnation and appeared in lineup announcements during the 2020s.

Sam Harris

Sam Harris joined a later incarnation of the Dead Boys on bass and has been listed among the musicians performing with the band during its current era.

Scott Churilla

Scott Churilla joined the later Dead Boys lineup on drums. He has performed with the Cheetah Chrome-led incarnation of the band during its recent touring period.

Mark Thorn

Mark Thorn became the Dead Boys’ lead vocalist in 2025. Cheetah Chrome has praised Thorn as the first singer in years whom he trusted to take over the Dead Boys vocal role, and Thorn has fronted the band’s recent incarnation.
