Rock and roll has always had a complicated relationship with drugs and alcohol, but some of its strongest songs come from artists confronting addiction, withdrawal, and the work of staying sober. These ten songs approach recovery from very different places, from direct personal testimony to warnings about what substance abuse can destroy.

# 10 – Tangled and Dark – Bonnie Raitt

Bonnie Raitt wrote “Tangled and Dark” for her 1991 album Luck of the Draw, which she co-produced with Don Was. Raitt had gotten sober several years earlier, and the album was dedicated to Stevie Ray Vaughan, whose own recovery had helped convince her that sobriety would not diminish her music. The song is not a literal recovery narrative, but its willingness to go into the difficult places underneath a relationship fits the period of personal change in which Raitt wrote it.

# 9 – One Day at a Time – Joe Walsh

Joe Walsh released “One Day at a Time” on his 2012 album Analog Man. Walsh has said directly that he wrote the song about getting sober and about the difference Alcoholics Anonymous made in his life. The title reflects one of recovery’s simplest ideas: stop trying to solve the rest of your life at once and get through today.

# 8 – Amazing – Aerosmith

Aerosmith released “Amazing” on 1993’s Get a Grip. Written by Steven Tyler and Richie Supa and produced by Bruce Fairbairn, the song looks back at addiction from the other side and turns recovery into a second chance at life. Don Henley supplies backing vocals, and the single reached No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.

# 7 – The Needle and the Spoon – Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “The Needle and the Spoon” appeared on 1974’s Second Helping. Written by Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins and produced by Al Kooper, the song was recorded at the Record Plant in Los Angeles and gives a blunt warning about heroin addiction. It is less a celebration of recovery than a warning about why getting out matters before addiction takes everything.

# 6 – Tightrope – Stevie Ray Vaughan

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Doyle Bramhall wrote “Tightrope” for Vaughan and Double Trouble’s 1989 album In Step, the first studio album Vaughan made after getting sober. Produced by Jim Gaines with Vaughan and Double Trouble, the album’s title itself points toward the language of twelve-step recovery. “Tightrope” captures the feeling of trying to stay balanced while leaving destructive habits behind.

# 5 – Wharf Rat – Grateful Dead

“Wharf Rat” was written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia and appears on the Grateful Dead’s 1971 live album commonly called Skull & Roses. The song follows August West, an alcoholic living by the docks who insists that he can still change his life. Years later, sober Deadheads adopted the name Wharf Rats for their own drug- and alcohol-free community at Grateful Dead shows.

# 4 – Got to Give It Up – Thin Lizzy

“Got to Give It Up” is from Thin Lizzy’s 1979 album Black Rose: A Rock Legend, not Chinatown. Written by Phil Lynott and Scott Gorham and produced by Thin Lizzy and Tony Visconti, the recording features Lynott, Gorham, Gary Moore, and Brian Downey. Lynott sings about trying to give up drinking and drugs while admitting how difficult it is to break the habit, which makes the song one of the band’s most direct statements about addiction.

# 3 – Just for Today – George Harrison

George Harrison released “Just for Today” on his 1987 album Cloud Nine, which he co-produced with Jeff Lynne. Harrison explained that the song came from an Alcoholics Anonymous leaflet shown to him by friends who had stopped drinking; its message was simply to deal with life one day at a time. That makes it one of the clearest recovery songs on this list even though Harrison wrote it from observation rather than presenting it as his own sobriety story.

# 2 – The No No Song – Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr recorded “The No No Song” for his 1974 album Goodnight Vienna. Written by Hoyt Axton and David Jackson and produced by Richard Perry, the comic song follows a narrator who repeatedly turns down marijuana, cocaine, and moonshine, and the single reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It should not be treated as documentation of Starr’s own sobriety at the time, but its entire joke is built around saying no to drugs and alcohol.

# 1 – Cold Turkey – John Lennon

John Lennon released “Cold Turkey” with the Plastic Ono Band in October 1969. Written by Lennon and produced by Lennon and Yoko Ono, the recording gives a brutally physical picture of withdrawal rather than the steadier recovery described in some of the other songs here. It reached No. 14 in the UK and No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, while Lennon himself described the song as self-explanatory when American radio programmers interpreted its drug references as controversial.
