System of a Down is an Armenian-American metal band formed in 1994 in the Los Angeles area. The band’s core lineup has remained Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan since Dolmayan replaced original drummer Andy Khachaturian in 1997. Known for rapid tempo changes, heavy riffs, unusual vocal arrangements, and Armenian musical influences, the band built a devoted following before breaking into the mainstream with Toxicity in 2001. Their catalog consists of five studio albums, beginning with System of a Down in 1998 and ending, so far, with Hypnotize in 2005.
System of a Down went on hiatus in 2006 and reunited in 2010 for live performances. In 2020, the four members released “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” their first new recordings in fifteen years. The band has continued to perform live without releasing a sixth studio album. System of a Down won its first Grammy Award at the 2006 ceremony, taking Best Hard Rock Performance for “B.Y.O.B.” from Mezmerize.
Here’s a closer look at the current and former members of System of a Down, starting with the musicians who shaped the band’s sound from its earliest years.
Serj Tankian
Serj Tankian is the lead vocalist, keyboardist, and one of the founding members of System of a Down. He joined forces with Daron Malakian in the early 1990s before System of a Down formed in 1994, and his wide-ranging voice quickly became central to the band’s identity. Tankian moves between melodic singing, aggressive delivery, spoken passages, and operatic phrasing in a way that immediately separates the band from most of its metal contemporaries. His lyrics and performances have often addressed war, human rights, identity, and social conflict.
Tankian appears on all five System of a Down studio albums, including System of a Down (1998), Toxicity (2001), Steal This Album! (2002), Mezmerize (2005), and Hypnotize (2005). His vocals on songs such as “Chop Suey!,” “Toxicity,” and “B.Y.O.B.” became some of the most recognizable performances in modern metal. He also participated in the band’s 2020 return to recording with “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz.”
Outside System of a Down, Tankian has maintained an extensive solo career beginning with Elect the Dead in 2007. His work has expanded into orchestral music, film scoring, collaborations, and other projects that allow him to move far beyond the boundaries of metal. Despite that independent work, his voice remains one of the defining elements of System of a Down.
Daron Malakian
Daron Malakian is System of a Down’s guitarist, a principal songwriter, and a major vocal presence alongside Serj Tankian. As a co-founder, Malakian helped establish the band’s unusual balance of violent riffs, sudden rhythmic changes, Armenian-influenced melodies, and dark humor. His guitar style can move from sharp thrash-inspired passages to melodic lines and sparse textures within the same song. By the time of Mezmerize and Hypnotize, his co-lead vocals had become an even larger part of the band’s sound.
Malakian wrote or co-wrote many of System of a Down’s best-known songs and became increasingly involved in production as the band’s career progressed. His influence is especially strong across Toxicity, Mezmerize, and Hypnotize, where his songwriting and vocal interplay with Tankian helped define the group’s most commercially successful period. He also wrote “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” the two songs System of a Down released in 2020.
Outside the band, Malakian formed Scars on Broadway, later billed as Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway. That project gave him a separate outlet for material that reflected his own songwriting, guitar work, production style, and lead vocals. His work both inside and outside System of a Down has made him one of the central architects of the band’s musical identity.
Shavo Odadjian
Shavo Odadjian is System of a Down’s bassist and one of the band’s founding members. Before taking over the bass role, he was involved with the group’s earliest development and briefly handled managerial responsibilities. His playing gives the band a powerful rhythmic foundation while leaving room for Malakian’s guitar and the contrasting voices of Tankian and Malakian. Odadjian’s bass work is especially effective during the abrupt stops, accelerations, and tempo changes that define so much of the band’s music.
Odadjian appears on all five System of a Down studio albums and on the band’s 2020 recordings. He also contributed to the group’s creative process beyond simply playing bass. His visual sense became another part of the band’s presentation, and he directed or co-directed several of System of a Down’s music videos during their rise.
Outside System of a Down, Odadjian has explored several different musical directions. His projects have included Achozen, which brought together rock and hip-hop influences, as well as later work with Seven Hours After Violet. Even with those outside ventures, his bass remains an essential part of the sound that listeners immediately recognize as System of a Down.
John Dolmayan
John Dolmayan is System of a Down’s drummer and percussionist. He joined the band in 1997 after original drummer Andy Khachaturian left, making Dolmayan the drummer heard on every System of a Down studio album. His precision and power allow the band to move through complicated rhythmic shifts without losing momentum. Songs such as “Chop Suey!,” “Toxicity,” and “B.Y.O.B.” demonstrate how much of the group’s intensity depends on his ability to change direction instantly.
Dolmayan played on System of a Down, Toxicity, Steal This Album!, Mezmerize, and Hypnotize. He also participated in “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz” in 2020. His drumming has remained central to the band’s live performances since the group reunited in 2010.
Outside System of a Down, Dolmayan has worked on several projects, including Scars on Broadway with Daron Malakian. He later released the covers project These Grey Men, which allowed him to reinterpret songs by artists from several different genres. His combination of technical control and aggressive attack remains one of System of a Down’s most recognizable musical strengths.
Andy Khachaturian
Andy Khachaturian was System of a Down’s original drummer, joining the band in 1994 and remaining through 1997. He played during the group’s formative club years and appears on early System of a Down demo recordings. Those early tapes helped document the band’s developing sound before its major-label debut. Khachaturian left after suffering a hand injury and was replaced by John Dolmayan before the recording of the 1998 self-titled studio album.
Khachaturian therefore does not play on System of a Down’s first album, despite his important role in the years that led up to it. After leaving the band, he co-founded The Apex Theory and became that group’s vocalist. He later worked with other projects including VoKee and pursued music under the name OnTronik. His three-year period with System of a Down remains an important part of the band’s earliest history.
