The Go-Go’s were formed in 1978 in Los Angeles, California. The group quickly established itself as a pioneering all-female band in the American new wave and pop punk scenes. The band originally emerged from the LA punk scene and achieved rapid success with their debut album Beauty and the Beat in 1981, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. This album, known for hits like “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed,” became one of the cornerstone albums of early 80s pop music. Throughout their career, The Go-Go’s have released four studio albums and underwent several breakups and reunions. They have been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
Belinda Carlisle
Belinda Carlisle joined The Go-Go’s as the lead vocalist at the band’s inception in 1978. She played a key role in their rise to fame, contributing significantly to all their studio albums. Carlisle’s voice became synonymous with The Go-Go’s sound, particularly on tracks like “Heaven is a Place on Earth” and “Vacation.” After the band’s initial breakup in 1985, Carlisle enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing hits such as “Mad About You” and “Heaven Is A Place On Earth.”
Charlotte Caffey
Charlotte Caffey, the lead guitarist and keyboardist, was instrumental in crafting The Go-Go’s pop sound, joining the band in 1978. She is credited with writing or co-writing some of the band’s most famous songs, including “We Got the Beat” and “Head Over Heels.” Caffey remained with the band through all its iterations and contributed to each of their studio albums. Outside The Go-Go’s, Caffey has worked on musical projects, including composing music for the stage.
Gina Schock
Gina Schock joined The Go-Go’s as the drummer in 1979, replacing original drummer Elissa Bello. Schock’s powerful drumming style was a driving force behind the band’s energetic pop and new wave tracks. She has been with the band for all their major releases and is known for her songwriting contributions as well. Beyond her work with The Go-Go’s, Schock has written songs for other artists, including Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez.
Kathy Valentine
Kathy Valentine joined The Go-Go’s as the bassist in 1980, just before the recording of their debut album. Her entry solidified the band’s lineup that would go on to achieve international fame. Valentine played on all of The Go-Go’s albums and was a key contributor to their songwriting. After leaving the band in 2013 due to legal disputes, Valentine released music as a solo artist and penned a memoir about her time with The Go-Go’s.
Jane Wiedlin
Jane Wiedlin, rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist, was one of the original members of The Go-Go’s. Her pop sensibilities and punk attitude significantly shaped the band’s music. Wiedlin wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s songs, including the hit “Our Lips Are Sealed.” After departing from the band in 1984, Wiedlin pursued a solo career, releasing albums and singles such as “Rush Hour.” She rejoined the band for subsequent reunions.
Paula Jean Brown
Paula Jean Brown joined The Go-Go’s as the bassist in 1985, stepping in after Kathy Valentine temporarily switched to rhythm guitar to fill in for Jane Wiedlin. Brown’s tenure with the band was during a transitional period, and she contributed to the recording of the band’s 1985 album Talk Show. This album included tracks such as “Head Over Heels,” continuing the band’s trend of catchy pop-rock songs. Although her time with The Go-Go’s was brief, as the band broke up later that year, Brown’s role helped them complete their touring and recording commitments during a pivotal time.
Margot Olavarria and Elissa Bello
Margot Olavarria, the band’s original bassist, and Elissa Bello, the original drummer, were part of The Go-Go’s formation in 1978 but left before the band recorded their debut album. Olavarria left due to health issues and differences in musical direction, while Bello was replaced for stylistic reasons. Neither participated in the band’s later commercial successes but were part of the initial lineup that established the band’s direction in the LA punk scene.
