Yoko Ono’s music catalog moves between primal-scream rock, conceptual sound, electronic experimentation, feminist songwriting, grief, dance music, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to peace. This complete A-to-Z guide brings together her 13 solo studio albums, recordings with John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band, soundtrack and compilation appearances, archival releases, and expanded editions of Season of Glass.

Yoko Ono’s career has spanned conceptual art, performance, film, literature, activism, and experimental music. Born in Tokyo, Japan, on February 18, 1933, she came from a family with strong artistic and academic traditions. After moving to the United States, Ono studied at Sarah Lawrence College and became deeply involved in New York’s avant-garde community. Her instruction pieces, films, and performances challenged conventional ideas about authorship, participation, sound, and the boundaries of art.
Among her most influential early works was Cut Piece, first performed in Kyoto and Tokyo in 1964 and later presented at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. The performance invited audience members to cut away pieces of Ono’s clothing, transforming the relationship between artist and viewer into an unsettling examination of vulnerability, violence, trust, and consent.
Ono had already established herself internationally before meeting John Lennon at her Indica Gallery exhibition in London in November 1966. Their personal and creative relationship developed over the following years through art, film, political action, and experimental recording. Their earliest albums together included Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins, Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions, and Wedding Album.
Ono and Lennon formed the Plastic Ono Band in 1969. Their work combined rock, improvisation, tape manipulation, noise, political protest, and conceptual performance. “Give Peace a Chance,” “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” “Cold Turkey,” “Remember Love,” “Listen, the Snow Is Falling,” and the recordings on Some Time in New York City connected their music with peace activism, feminism, antiwar protest, and social criticism.
Ono launched her solo studio career with Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band in 1970. Its raw vocal performances and stripped-down instrumentation pushed rock toward free improvisation and emotional extremity. Fly, Approximately Infinite Universe, and Feeling the Space followed during the early 1970s, expanding her work through blues, rock, feminist themes, conceptual pieces, electronic sound, and direct political commentary.
After Lennon’s murder in December 1980, Ono released Season of Glass, a brutally personal album shaped by grief, anger, memory, and survival. She continued through It’s Alright (I See Rainbows), Starpeace, Rising, A Blueprint for a Sunrise, Between My Head and the Sky, Take Me to the Land of Hell, and Warzone. The latter, released in 2018, was identified by her official site as her thirteenth solo studio album.
Ono’s influence became increasingly visible in alternative rock, punk, new wave, electronic music, and dance culture. Remixes and reinterpretations brought songs including “Walking on Thin Ice,” “Hell in Paradise,” “Everyman… Everywoman…,” and “I’m Not Getting Enough” to new audiences. Collaborative projects such as Yes, I’m a Witch, Yes, I’m a Witch Too, and Yokokimthurston connected her work with generations of experimental, indie, electronic, and rock artists.
Yoko Ono has received two Grammy Awards from five nominations. She shared the Album of the Year award for Double Fantasy and later received a Grammy for the music film Gimme Some Truth: The Making of John Lennon’s Imagine Album. Her broader recognition has included the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale and the 2024 Edward MacDowell Medal.
Her work as an activist has remained inseparable from her art. The WAR IS OVER! If You Want It campaign, Wish Tree, the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER in Iceland, antiwar projects, environmental advocacy, and support for human rights have carried the same participatory message found throughout her music and conceptual work.
In 2024, the major retrospective Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind opened at Tate Modern before traveling internationally. The exhibition reached The Broad in Los Angeles in 2026, becoming Ono’s first solo museum exhibition in Southern California and presenting seven decades of instruction pieces, films, objects, sound works, and participatory art.
In 2026, Secretly Canadian announced a 45th-anniversary reissue of Season of Glass. The expanded CD and digital edition was scheduled to add “Walking on Thin Ice,” “I Don’t Know Why (Demo),” and “Dogtown (Phil Spector Mix),” returning one of Ono’s most important albums to wide circulation.
Across every stage of her career, Yoko Ono has challenged audiences to listen differently. Her music can be confrontational, intimate, humorous, mournful, political, or deliberately difficult, but it has always treated sound as an extension of thought, action, and imagination.
