Richard Paul Astley was born in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, and developed as a drummer and singer before joining the soul band FBI. Producer Pete Waterman heard Astley perform and invited him to London, where he learned the recording process while working with the Stock Aitken Waterman production team.

“Never Gonna Give You Up” transformed Astley into an international pop star. The single reached number one in the United Kingdom and the United States, while the album Whenever You Need Somebody produced additional hits including the title track, “Together Forever,” “When I Fall in Love,” and “It Would Take a Strong Strong Man.”

Hold Me in Your Arms gave Astley greater involvement as a songwriter and musician. “She Wants to Dance with Me,” “Take Me to Your Heart,” “Giving Up on Love,” and the title track extended his chart success while indicating the more personal direction he wanted to pursue.

Astley moved away from the Stock Aitken Waterman sound on Free, emphasizing soul, gospel, and adult contemporary arrangements. “Cry for Help,” “Move Right Out,” and “Never Knew Love” introduced that transition. Body & Soul followed before Astley stepped away from the music business to devote more time to his family.

He returned with Keep It Turned On and later recorded the standards album Portrait. A wider cultural revival followed when “Never Gonna Give You Up” became the center of the rickrolling phenomenon, introducing Astley to an audience that had not experienced his original chart run.

50 marked a major creative and commercial return. Astley wrote, performed, and produced the album, while the same period produced “Keep Singing,” “Angels on My Side,” “Dance,” and “This Old House.” Beautiful Life continued that self-directed period, followed by the career-spanning collection The Best of Me and its reimagined recordings.

Are We There Yet? drew from soul, gospel, country, and American roots music on songs including “Dippin’ My Feet,” “Never Gonna Stop,” “Forever and More,” and “Driving Me Crazy.” Astley then released “Waiting On You” and “Raindrops,” while the tenth-anniversary edition of 50 added live performances recorded at London’s O2 Arena.

The larger catalog also includes collaborations, charitable recordings, B-sides, holiday songs, covers of artists ranging from Don McLean to Foo Fighters, and performances with musicians from several generations. Those recordings reveal a singer whose career has remained durable because he learned how to separate his identity from a single period of fame without rejecting the songs that created it.
