Black Sabbath’s Last Stand: Metal Legends United For One Night

Black Sabbath's Final Bow at Back to the Beginning

A monumental chapter in heavy metal history came to a close on July 5, 2025, when Black Sabbath reunited for one final performance at Back to the Beginning at Villa Park in Birmingham. The concert brought Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward together onstage for the first time since 2005 and marked the final live performance of the original Black Sabbath lineup. It was also Ozzy Osbourne’s final live appearance, bringing his performing career full circle in the city where Black Sabbath began.

Back to the Beginning became far more than a Sabbath reunion. The all-day event brought together Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Tool, Pantera, Gojira, Halestorm, Lamb of God, Anthrax, Mastodon, Rival Sons, and other major names from across hard rock and metal. Many of the performers paid tribute to Black Sabbath directly through covers and collaborative performances, turning Villa Park into a celebration of the band’s influence across generations.

Black Sabbath had previously ended its touring career in 2017 after The End tour, which featured Osbourne, Iommi, and Butler without Ward. Ozzy had spoken for years about wanting one final performance with the original drummer, and that wish was finally realized in Birmingham. The reunion lasted only four songs, but seeing all four founding members together again gave the band’s live story the ending that had been missing.

Tom Morello served as musical director for the event and helped organize a series of all-star performances throughout the day. Musicians including Billy Corgan, Steven Tyler, Ronnie Wood, Yungblud, Zakk Wylde, Travis Barker, Chad Smith, Danny Carey, K.K. Downing, and many others appeared in special collaborations, while multiple bands worked Black Sabbath songs into their own sets. The result felt less like a conventional festival and more like the heavy-metal community gathering to salute the musicians who helped create the genre.

Ozzy Osbourne performed his final solo set seated on a throne because of the health problems that had severely limited his mobility. Backed by Zakk Wylde, Mike Inez, Adam Wakeman, and Tommy Clufetos, he sang “I Don’t Know,” “Mr. Crowley,” “Suicide Solution,” “Mama, I’m Coming Home,” and “Crazy Train.” His physical condition was impossible to ignore, but so was the emotion of the moment as he thanked the crowd and completed the final solo performance of his career.

Black Sabbath then took the stage for the closing set. Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, and Ozzy Osbourne performed “War Pigs,” “N.I.B.,” “Iron Man,” and “Paranoid.” Ozzy remained seated, but the original lineup still delivered the moment fans had waited two decades to see. “Paranoid” became the final song Black Sabbath ever performed live, followed by fireworks and confetti across Villa Park.

The Birmingham setting gave the farewell an added sense of history. Villa Park, home of Aston Villa Football Club, stood only a short distance from the neighborhoods where the members of Black Sabbath grew up and first began making music together. The band had also been awarded the Freedom of the City of Birmingham shortly before the concert, making the homecoming feel like both a farewell and a civic celebration.

The concert drew roughly 40,000 fans to Villa Park and was streamed to millions more around the world. The show was organized as a charity event, with profits shared among Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorns Children’s Hospice. That charitable purpose gave the final gathering another connection to Birmingham and to the health challenges that had shaped Ozzy’s later years.

The meaning of Back to the Beginning became even more profound less than three weeks later. Ozzy Osbourne died on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, surrounded by his family. What had been planned as a final concert became his final public appearance and one of the last great moments of his life in music. The image of Ozzy seated before a hometown crowd, followed by one last Black Sabbath performance with Iommi, Butler, and Ward, became the closing scene of a career that had helped define heavy metal for more than half a century.

Back to the Beginning ultimately delivered what its title promised. Black Sabbath returned to Birmingham, reunited its original lineup, and ended its live career where the story had started. The night celebrated the band’s enormous influence while giving Ozzy Osbourne the farewell he had wanted, surrounded by his bandmates, his family, fellow musicians, and generations of fans.
