Complete List Of ZZ Top Songs From A to Z

ZZ Top created one of rock’s most recognizable catalogs by combining Texas blues, boogie rhythms, hard-rock guitar, sly humor, futuristic production, and an unmistakable visual identity. This complete A-to-Z guide brings together the band’s 15 studio albums, bonus tracks, live recordings, early singles, compilation exclusives, and the 2022 soundtrack album RAW.

ZZ Top emerged from Houston, Texas, in 1969 and developed into one of America’s most durable rock bands. Guitarist and vocalist Billy Gibbons formed the original group after the breakup of his psychedelic band Moving Sidewalks. Bassist Lanier Greig and drummer Dan Mitchell were part of the earliest lineup, but Frank Beard and Dusty Hill soon joined Gibbons. The classic trio was in place by 1970 and remained unchanged for more than five decades.

From the beginning, ZZ Top drew heavily from Texas blues while adding hard-rock volume, boogie rhythms, dry humor, and Billy Gibbons’ economical guitar style. The band signed with London Records and released ZZ Top’s First Album in 1971. Rio Grande Mud followed in 1972, expanding the group’s reputation through songs including “Francine,” “Just Got Paid,” and “Sure Got Cold After the Rain Fell.”

The commercial breakthrough arrived with Tres Hombres in 1973. “La Grange,” inspired by the Texas establishment later immortalized in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, became one of the band’s defining songs. “Waitin’ for the Bus,” “Jesus Just Left Chicago,” “Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers,” and “Master of Sparks” helped establish the album as a landmark of American blues rock.

Fandango! followed in 1975, combining live and studio material. “Tush,” “Blue Jean Blues,” and “Heard It on the X” strengthened ZZ Top’s position as a major touring and recording act. The group’s Worldwide Texas Tour became famous for its enormous stage production and live animals, including buffalo, longhorn cattle, rattlesnakes, and vultures.

After Tejas in 1976 and an extended break from touring, ZZ Top returned with Degüello in 1979. Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill had grown the long beards that became central to the band’s image. Songs including “Cheap Sunglasses,” “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide,” “A Fool for Your Stockings,” and “She Loves My Automobile” connected the group’s blues foundation with a sharper and more contemporary sound.

El Loco in 1981 introduced more electronic elements, but the transformation became complete with Eliminator in 1983. “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” “Got Me Under Pressure,” and “TV Dinners” fused blues-rock guitar with synthesizers, sequencers, and drum-machine precision. Music videos built around the Eliminator coupe made ZZ Top one of MTV’s defining acts.

The multi-platinum Afterburner followed in 1985 with “Sleeping Bag,” “Stages,” “Rough Boy,” and “Velcro Fly.” The band continued through Recycler, Antenna, Rhythmeen, XXX, Mescalero, and La Futura, balancing technological experimentation with its blues and boogie roots.

ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. The band has received three Grammy Award nominations, including nominations for Eliminator, Afterburner, and the documentary That Little Ol’ Band from Texas. Its innovative videos also earned three MTV Video Music Awards.

Dusty Hill died on July 28, 2021, ending the extraordinary run of the Gibbons, Hill, and Beard lineup. Hill had asked that longtime guitar technician Elwood Francis continue on bass, and the band honored that request. Frank Beard stepped away from portions of the 2025 and 2026 touring schedules for health-related absences before returning to the road. ZZ Top continued performing with Gibbons, Beard, and Francis.

In 2022, ZZ Top released RAW (‘That Little Ol’ Band From Texas’ Original Soundtrack). The 12-track album captured Gibbons, Hill, and Beard playing together at Gruene Hall during the filming of the band’s documentary. Its stripped-down versions of “Brown Sugar,” “La Grange,” “Tush,” “Legs,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” and other classics preserved one of the final recorded performances by the classic trio.

ZZ Top’s songs remain fixtures of classic rock radio, film, television, advertising, sporting events, and concert stages. The band’s combination of blues tradition, mechanical precision, Texas imagery, humor, and instantly recognizable riffs has allowed its music to remain both deeply rooted and endlessly adaptable.
