Steve Winwood’s musical journey began in Birmingham, England, where his talent as a singer and multi-instrumentalist emerged at an unusually young age. By his teenage years, he had developed a commanding style on the Hammond organ, piano, and guitar. At 15, he became the lead vocalist and keyboardist for the Spencer Davis Group, bringing his distinctive voice to major hits including “Keep On Running,” “Somebody Help Me,” “Gimme Some Lovin’,” and “I’m a Man.”

After leaving the Spencer Davis Group, Winwood co-founded Traffic in 1967 with Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood, and Dave Mason. The group gave him a broader musical setting in which to explore rhythm and blues, jazz, folk, psychedelia, and progressive rock. Albums including Mr. Fantasy, Traffic, John Barleycorn Must Die, and The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys established Traffic as one of the most adventurous British bands of its era.

During a break in Traffic’s activity, Winwood joined Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech in Blind Faith. The short-lived supergroup released one studio album in 1969, featuring “Can’t Find My Way Home,” “Had to Cry Today,” “Sea of Joy,” and “Presence of the Lord.” Winwood returned to Traffic after Blind Faith dissolved and continued recording with the band through the 1970s.

Winwood launched his solo career with the album Steve Winwood in 1977. His 1980 follow-up, Arc of a Diver, became his commercial breakthrough and included “While You See a Chance,” “Spanish Dancer,” and the title track. Talking Back to the Night followed in 1982 with the original recordings of “Valerie,” “Still in the Game,” and “Talking Back to the Night.”

His greatest solo commercial success came with Back in the High Life in 1986. “Higher Love,” featuring Chaka Khan on backing vocals, earned Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. The album also included “The Finer Things,” “Freedom Overspill,” and “Back in the High Life Again.”

Roll with It followed in 1988 and produced another number-one title track. Winwood continued with Refugees of the Heart, Junction Seven, About Time, and Nine Lives, bringing his solo studio catalog to nine albums. His later work returned frequently to the Hammond-organ-driven combination of soul, jazz, blues, and rock that had shaped his earliest recordings.

Winwood has also worked extensively as a session musician and collaborator, recording or performing with artists including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Carlos Santana, Christina Aguilera, Van Morrison, and Gov’t Mule. Traffic was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
