Tems, whose full name is Temilade Openiyi, was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1995. She spent part of her early childhood in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria, where she attended Dowen College in Lagos. She later studied economics at Monash South Africa. Tems developed an interest in music at a young age, learned to play the piano, and began recording songs with her own equipment.

Her professional recording career began in 2018 with the self-produced single “Mr Rebel.” Tems followed it with “Try Me” in 2019, a song that significantly expanded her audience in Nigeria and beyond. Her distinctive blend of alternative R&B, Afrobeats, and soul helped establish her as one of the most original voices emerging from the Nigerian music scene.

In September 2020, Tems released her debut EP, For Broken Ears. The seven-song project included “Damages,” “Free Mind,” “Higher,” “Ice T,” and “The Key.” Tems wrote and produced much of the EP herself, establishing her identity as a vocalist, songwriter, and producer.

Her international breakthrough accelerated through her appearance on Wizkid’s “Essence,” originally released on Made in Lagos in 2020. The song became a global hit and later received a remix featuring Justin Bieber. Tems followed that success with an appearance on Drake’s “Fountains” from Certified Lover Boy and released her second EP, If Orange Was a Place, in September 2021.

Tems continued appearing on major international releases. Beyoncé featured her alongside Grace Jones on “Move,” Future and Drake used her vocals on the Grammy-winning “Wait for U,” and she recorded “No Woman No Cry” for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Tems also co-wrote Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up,” which received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song in 2023.

Her debut studio album, Born in the Wild, was released in June 2024. The eighteen-track album included “Me & U,” “Not an Angel,” “Love Me JeJe,” “Burning,” “Boy O Boy,” “Free Fall” with J. Cole, and “Get It Right” with Asake. The record expanded her exploration of love, freedom, identity, faith, and personal transformation.

Tems won her first Grammy Award in 2023 for Best Melodic Rap Performance as a featured artist on Future’s “Wait for U.” She won her second Grammy in 2025 when “Love Me JeJe” received the award for Best African Music Performance. Her honors also include BET Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, and a Billboard Music Award.

In 2025, Tems released the seven-song EP Love Is A Kingdom. The project included “First,” “I’m Not Sure,” “Big Daddy,” “Lagos Love,” “Mine,” “What You Need,” and “Is There A Reason.” She also appeared on Ciza and Omah Lay’s “Isaka II (6am)” and joined Dave on “Raindance.”

Her activity continued in 2026 with the release of “What You Need – A COLORS SHOW.” Tems has remained an influential figure in contemporary African music while maintaining a strong emphasis on creative independence and control over her work.
