Tems, whose full name is Temilade Openiyi, was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1995. She spent her early years in Lagos and later lived briefly in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria. Tems attended Dowen College in Lagos and then Monash South Africa for university. Her musical journey began at a young age, influenced by her mother and the music played at home. As a teenager, she learned to play piano and started recording songs using her own equipment.
Her professional career started in earnest in 2018, when she released her debut single “Mr Rebel.” This initial track was self-produced and helped her gain attention in the Nigerian alternative music scene. Tems followed up with another single, “Try Me,” in 2019, which significantly expanded her audience both in Nigeria and internationally. The song’s success established her as a rising star and brought further recognition to her unique blend of R&B, Afrobeats, and soul.
In September 2020, Tems released her debut extended play, For Broken Ears. The EP featured the standout track “Damages,” which charted in Nigeria and gained popularity in several African countries. The project was written and produced largely by Tems herself, showcasing her skills as both a vocalist and producer. For Broken Ears drew critical praise for its emotional depth and the distinctiveness of Tems’s sound.
Her breakthrough on the international stage came in 2020 when she was featured on Wizkid’s single “Essence.” The song became a global hit, charting on the Billboard Hot 100 after being remixed with an additional verse from Justin Bieber. “Essence” was nominated for Best Global Music Performance at the Grammy Awards and won several accolades, including awards at the BET Awards and NAACP Image Awards.
Tems’s momentum continued in 2021 with her appearance on the remix of “Fountains,” a track from Drake’s album Certified Lover Boy. This collaboration helped introduce her to an even wider international audience. She then released her second extended play, If Orange Was a Place, in September 2021, which included the single “Crazy Tings.” The EP reached the top of the Apple Music charts in Nigeria and received positive critical reception.
The singer’s debut studio album, Born in the Wild, was released in June 2024. The album contains collaborations with prominent artists and continues her exploration of themes around love, freedom, and self-discovery. Born in the Wild charted in several countries and solidified Tems’s status as a prominent artist in contemporary music.
Tems has received major awards throughout her career, including a Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for her contribution to Future’s “Wait for U” alongside Drake. She has also won BET Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, and a Billboard Music Award. In 2022, she was nominated for the Golden Globe and Academy Awards for Best Original Song for her work as a songwriter on “Lift Me Up” by Rihanna, which was featured on the soundtrack for the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Her success has led to appearances at major international music festivals and collaborations with high-profile artists across genres. Tems has been recognized for her influence in shaping the sound of contemporary African music and for bringing Nigerian R&B to a global stage.
Beyond her music, Tems has participated in brand campaigns and advocacy for women’s rights and creative independence in the music industry. She is known for her outspoken support for women and for maintaining creative control over her work.
