Royal Blood formed in Brighton, England, in 2011 with Mike Kerr on vocals and bass guitar and Ben Thatcher on drums. The duo built its reputation through an unusually dense sound created with bass, effects, split signals, and forceful drumming rather than a traditional guitar-led rock lineup.

Before Royal Blood officially formed, Kerr and Thatcher had played together in earlier projects, but the stripped-down two-piece configuration gave the music its identity. The band signed with Warner Bros. Records, and wider attention followed after Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders wore a Royal Blood shirt during the Glastonbury Festival. The self-titled debut album arrived in 2014 and reached number one on the UK Albums Chart through songs including “Out of the Black,” “Come On Over,” “Figure It Out,” and “Little Monster.”

How Did We Get So Dark? followed in 2017 and also reached number one in the United Kingdom. “Lights Out,” “I Only Lie When I Love You,” “Hook, Line & Sinker,” and the title track preserved the duo’s physical attack while expanding its melodic and rhythmic range.

Typhoons marked a sharp stylistic turn through dance-rock rhythms, electronic textures, and disco influence. “Trouble’s Coming,” “Boilermaker,” “Limbo,” “Oblivion,” and the title track placed the band’s heaviness inside a more elastic rhythmic framework. Royal Blood also revisited “All We Have Is Now” and “Limbo” through separate orchestral arrangements.

The self-produced Back to the Water Below arrived in 2023. “Mountains at Midnight,” “Pull Me Through,” “Shiner in the Dark,” “The Firing Line,” and “Waves” showed a band willing to move between direct riff-driven rock, piano, atmosphere, and restrained songwriting without changing its two-person foundation.

Royal Blood expanded the debut album for its tenth anniversary with B-sides, bonus tracks, alternate mixes, and festival recordings. The collection brought “One Trick Pony,” “You Want Me,” “Love and Leave It Alone,” “Sleeptalker,” “Hole,” and five live performances together with the original ten-song album.

The duo’s catalog also includes “Sad but True,” recorded for The Metallica Blacklist, and “Honeybrains,” first released as a standalone single before appearing on a later edition of Back to the Water Below.

After a period away from the stage, Royal Blood announced a live return and began teasing unreleased music. No new song titles had been officially released when this article was updated, so the A-to-Z catalog below includes only recordings that have received an official release.

Royal Blood’s minimalist setup has never limited its ambition. The restrictions became the method: Kerr pushes the bass into several roles at once, Thatcher supplies both momentum and spectacle, and the spaces between them make the riffs sound even larger.
