The Yardbirds formed in London in 1963 around singer and harmonica player Keith Relf, guitarist Anthony “Top” Topham, rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja, bassist Paul Samwell-Smith, and drummer Jim McCarty. Eric Clapton replaced Topham during the group’s first year, and the band soon became the house act at the Crawdaddy Club after the Rolling Stones moved on. Their early repertoire drew heavily from Chicago blues and rhythm and blues, but their extended instrumental “rave-ups” gave the music a tension and momentum that separated them from straightforward revivalists.

Five Live Yardbirds, recorded at London’s Marquee Club in March 1964, documented the Clapton lineup at full force. “Smokestack Lightning,” “I’m a Man,” “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl,” “Too Much Monkey Business,” and “Here ’Tis” captured the band’s live attack. Their commercial direction changed with Graham Gouldman’s “For Your Love,” which became a major transatlantic hit in 1965. Clapton objected to the move away from blues and left soon afterward.

Jeff Beck replaced Clapton and transformed the Yardbirds’ recordings through feedback, sustain, distortion, and unconventional guitar textures. “Heart Full of Soul,” “Evil Hearted You,” “Still I’m Sad,” “Shapes of Things,” and “Over Under Sideways Down” pushed British pop toward psychedelia and harder rock. The 1966 British album Yardbirds, commonly known as Roger the Engineer, contained twelve original compositions. Epic issued a ten-song American configuration under the title Over Under Sideways Down.

Jimmy Page joined in 1966, initially replacing Samwell-Smith on bass before Chris Dreja moved to bass and Page shifted to guitar beside Beck. The brief Beck-Page lineup recorded “Happenings Ten Years Time Ago,” its B-side “Psycho Daisies,” and “Stroll On” for Michelangelo Antonioni’s film Blow-Up. Beck left later that year, leaving Page as the sole lead guitarist.

Little Games appeared in 1967 under producer Mickie Most. Its original ten-song program included “Drinking Muddy Water,” “Glimpses,” “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor,” and “White Summer.” The same period produced important standalone singles and B-sides including “Puzzles,” “Ha Ha Said the Clown,” “Ten Little Indians,” “Goodnight Sweet Josephine,” and “Think About It.”

The original Yardbirds ended in 1968. Page assembled a new touring lineup to fulfill remaining commitments before that group became Led Zeppelin. Recordings from the final Yardbirds period were officially collected on Yardbirds ’68 in 2017, combining the March 1968 Anderson Theater concert with studio sketches including “Avron Knows,” “Spanish Blood,” “Taking a Hold on Me,” and “Knowing That I’m Losing You (Tangerine).”

Jim McCarty and Chris Dreja helped revive the Yardbirds name in the 1990s. Birdland arrived in 2003 with eight new recordings of classic songs and seven new compositions, supported by guest appearances from Jeff Beck, Brian May, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Slash, and other musicians. Dreja later retired from performing because of health problems and died in September 2025. McCarty continued leading a touring version of the band into 2026.
