The Marías emerged from Los Angeles with a sound that seemed to exist between waking life and a late-night film. Vocalist María Zardoya, born in Puerto Rico and raised in the Atlanta area, brought bilingual songwriting and an intimate vocal style to the atmospheric production of drummer and producer Josh Conway. Their music blended indie pop, soul, jazz, psychedelia, electronic textures, and Latin influences without allowing any one category to define the band.

Zardoya and Conway met in Los Angeles in 2016 and began writing together almost immediately. Guitarist Jesse Perlman and keyboardist Edward James later completed the group’s core lineup. The band’s early concerts became known for cinematic lighting, carefully controlled pacing, and fluid arrangements that made the visual presentation feel inseparable from the music.

Superclean, Vol. I arrived in 2017 with “I Don’t Know You,” “Basta Ya,” “Only in My Dreams,” “I Like It,” “Superclean,” and “Déjate Llevar.” The following year’s Superclean, Vol. II added “Ruthless,” “Cariño,” “ABQ,” “Loverboy,” “Over the Moon,” and “Clueless,” extending the group’s mixture of soft-focus production, jazz-informed instrumentation, and English and Spanish lyrics.

The Marías continued releasing standalone recordings between those early projects and their first album. “Drip” paired them with Triathalon, while their version of “…Baby One More Time,” the live recording “Out for the Night,” “Hold It Together,” “Jupiter,” “Care for You,” “bop it up!,” and “We’re the Lucky Ones” revealed how naturally the band could move between covers, dream pop, funk, soul, and understated dance music.

After signing with Atlantic Records, the group released CINEMA in 2021. The album’s title reflected the band’s fascination with film, color, and atmosphere, while songs including “Hush,” “Heavy,” “All I Really Want Is You,” “Un Millón,” “Little by Little,” and “The Mice Inside This Room” expanded its musical and emotional range. “Hush” reached number one on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart.

The band’s audience grew further through collaborations. The Marías appeared with Bad Bunny on “Otro Atardecer” from Un Verano Sin Ti, joined Tainy and Young Miko on “mañana,” recorded “Si Me Voy” with Cuco, and appeared on two Eyedress singles, “Separate Ways” and “A Room Up in the Sky.” These recordings connected the group’s atmospheric pop to Latin music, reggaeton, and other corners of independent music.

Submarine followed in 2024, shaped by emotional upheaval within the band and presented through an immersive blue visual world. “Ride,” “Run Your Mouth,” “Lejos de Ti,” “No One Noticed,” “If Only,” “Sienna,” “Paranoia,” and “Vicious Sensitive Robot” balanced melancholy with rhythm, restraint, and detailed production. “No One Noticed” became the group’s largest crossover hit and later appeared in extended English and Spanish versions.

The Marías returned in 2025 with “Back to Me” and “Nobody New.” They also joined Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco on “Ojos Tristes,” a recording built around the emotional and melodic influence of Jeanette’s Spanish-language classic “El Muchacho de los Ojos Tristes.” In 2026, the band appeared on beabadoobee’s “All I Did Was Dream of You,” continuing a catalog defined by collaboration, bilingual expression, and a carefully constructed sense of atmosphere.
